Ahmed Bahar says extending presidential tenure till end of PLC term against the law [ 20/05/2008 - 10:29 AM ] GAZA, (PIC)-- Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the acting PLC speaker, has called for abiding by the Palestinian basic law in the issue of presidential elections, stressing that extending presidential term in office until the time of legislative elections was not legal. Bahar warned in a statement to Quds Press on Monday against tampering with the presidential elections' date. He explained that the presidential elections should take place as scheduled at conclusion of the current PA chief Mahmoud Abbas's term in office which expires on 8/1/2009. He said that the president has to resign and the PLC speaker takes over his place for 60 days during which elections of a new president would take place as stipulated in the Palestinian basic law, which also limits the presidential term in office to four years. Hamas and other Palestinian factions might nominate candidates for the presidential elections, Bahar underlined, noting, however, that elections should be made in a state of national harmony and internal concord. He stressed that national unity and an end to the state of division were a must for any elections to take place.
