Surviving the Brutal Israeli Siege: Palestinians in Dair El-Balah, Gaza Strip Use Solar Energy for Cooking in Clay Ovens The brutal Israeli siege of Gaza Strip deprived 1.5 million Palestinians of continuous electricity supplies, which affected all aspects of life, including cooking. In response, an engineer from Dair El-Balah, called Khaled Basheer, invented an oven working with the solar energy. He used a glass mirror to focus the sun rays to an oven made of clay, as seen from the photos below. For more than three years now, Palestinians in Gaza Strip have been subjected to the Israeli siege, without any serious attempts to end it. It represents a collective punishment of the Gaza civilian population by the Israelis and their supporters.
