A Bloody Presidency

Estimates of Iraqis killed in the Bush/ Blair illegitimate war, range from at least 100,000 to over half a million, to which must be added 4000 US soldiers killed and 30,000 wounded.

For every person killed in the Twin Towers on 9/11, Bush’s retaliation has led to the deaths of, probably, 80 Iraqis and at least one US soldier plus 10 troops injured - i.e. more than 81 human lives – mostly civilian - violently ended and 10 seriously damaged in revenge for every single person killed on 9/11.

Was this neo-Conservatism, evangelical Christianity, political Zionism, simple revenge or merely an obscenely misguided policy? Whichever it was – it was certainly not God’s will.

In a few months, Bush (and Olmert) will have retired to live in luxury to play golf, hit the ‘after dinner speaker’ circuit and quietly live off their ‘investments’. But thousands of families will sit at home, or at their desk, in silence,  nursing their grief. Some still consumed with bitterness and anger at the bloody legacy of the Bush presidency.

UK Muslims Seek Fairness, not Special Dispensation

MCB welcomes insightful recommendations on engagement with Muslims

The Muslim Council of Britain welcomes Sadiq Khan MP's incisive and thoughtful analysis of the Muslim community in his Fabian Society pamphlet Fairness not Favours: How to reconnect with British Muslims which has been published today.  Mr Khan proposes a number of recommendations for all of us. Some may be challenging, and will require debate and the Muslim Council of Britain seeks a dispassionate discourse devoid of the usual rhetoric that comes with discussion about Muslims. MCB supports Mr Khan's proposal that government should deal with Muslims on the basis of 'engagement' rather than 'endorsement', on a fair and equal footing.

"This is an insightful and candid contribution to a challenging and much misunderstood agenda. Sadiq Khan's experience, intellect and standing can be trusted to voice the legitimate expectations of the political establishment from Muslims as citizens and of Muslims for fair and equal treatment.

His analysis of relevant issues is courageous and his recommendations require positive action from all sides. The MCB welcomes this excellent intervention. We are very pleased to note that Sadiq Khan asks for introduction of positive duty in the legislative framework for elimination of discrimination on grounds of religion in the areas of the provision of goods, facilities and services. The MCB has for many years been campaigning for this pressing need. Muslims do not seek favours. We seek fairness." said Khurshid Drabu the Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the MCB.
