Video of Palestinian Mother & Daughter Meet 15 Years after Israeli-Perpetrated, Sharon-Supervised Sabra & Shatila Massacre

Wafa' Al-Natheema, March 19, 2008

Rehab Kanaan, a Palestinian poet born in Beirut in 1959, was seen numerous times on Arab satellite channels to read her patriotic poetry on Palestine, the Intifada and the suppression of the Zionist occupation, and so was dubbed al-Khansa' of Palestine. She Lost 54 people from her family in the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon. Fate made her eight-year old child named Maimana survive that massacre during which one of her neighbours in one of the camps in Lebanon raised and took care of her. The mother did not know that her daughter had survived the massacre, and no one in the life of the daughter had known that the mother also survived.

Then the poet mother travelled from Lebanon to Tunisia and married there and stayed for 15 years during which the Lebanese authorities did not allow her to return and visit Lebanon. At the beginning of the second Palestinian Intifada, Rihab appeared on Sattelite TV to read some of her nationalistic poems and was recognized by one of her neighbours from the days of the Sabra and Shatila massacres, so he told Maimana that her mother is still alive and so the daughter was anxiously happy. The neighbor called Abu Dhabi TV Channel, and they kindly arranged for the mother to meet with her daughter without the knowledge of the mother.

The scene of the mother-daughter meeting was very emotional.

Here is the clip, please distribute it along with the Arabic and English commentary:
