Ramadan Appeal 2007 Help Palestinian students at Birzeit University

Friends of Birzeit University Ramadan Appeal October 2007

Dear Friend,

I hope that this letter finds you in the best of Iman and health during this holy month of Ramadan.  We are writing to you to see if you would be interested in helping Palestinian students at Birzeit who are continuing to suffer under occupation. There are several ways - to donate to Friends of Birzeit University and allow us to continue our vital work in supporting this incredible university.

Birzeit University, Palestine's leading university, is one of the leading Palestinian universities in the Occupied Territories, striving to promote excellence by providing quality academic teaching, training, research and relevant community programs, emphasizing social awareness and democratic civic values in a free Palestinian society.  The future of education at Birzeit University is under serious threat. Its services are vital to provide the human intellectual capacity for a future Palestinian state and to help stem the acute brain drain from the occupied territories. Helping these students is a vital long term investment.

**What does Friends of Birzeit University do?**

Friends of Birzeit University (FoBZU) was founded as a registered charity in 1978 in response to the Israeli closures of Birzeit University. FoBZU  supports education at Birzeit University and to uphold Palestinian right to academic freedom. It does this through three main activities: Fundraising, Project Development and Campaigning.

*    Fundraising - The Hardship Fund has helped over 400 students continue their education. But many more students need your help - two-thirds of Birzeit Students have to have help to pay their tuition fees. FoBZU has also established funds such as the Adela Every Scholarship Fund and the Doreen Ingrams Scholarship fund which provide scholarships to women for the duration of their degree.
*    Project Development - FoBZU has secured grants over £1.5 million from British and European funding agencies to run key development projects including a School Counselling Programme, Mental health project and Adult literacy scheme.
*    Campaigning - FoBZU campaigns for the Palestinian right to education and against human rights violations of Birzeit University students and staff. FoBZU lobbies government on these issues and holds events and talks to raise awareness among the general public.

I hope that you will consider donating to this appeal.
This is now also possible online via https://secure.efundraising.org.uk/tailored/donation.asp?charity=92501

Ramadan Appeal 2007

  • "In one year I will graduate from university and I will tell everybody about your assistance to me and its impact on my academic life. I repeat my thanks. May God bless your society to help all students."

Yousef, Birzeit University student

  • "You helped me pay a substantial portion of my debt which was a difficulty for my mother. I hope to achieve my dream and to serve my country, my people and to give back to Birzeit University."

Fathi is a second year student studying electrical engineering at Birzeit. His father passed away 10 years ago. Friends                 of Birzeit University provided assistance to pay Fathi's tuition.

  • "I very much appreciate your support so that I can continue my study, which would not be possible without your help. I hope to graduate and be able to assist my younger sisters to continue their education."

Nisreen, Arabic Language and Literature student

  • Asma is no stranger to hardship. For four years, every morning she left her unemployed parents and ten siblings in their Nablus village to take the 40- kilometre journey to Birzeit University. Despite enduring a three to five hour round trip through roadblocks and checkpoints, Asma was an honours student. Thanks to her own perseverance and support from the Hardship Fund, Asma completed her studies.

Palestinian students continue to face many difficulties beyond the academic challenges every student must face in completing their education.

Your contribution during this difficult time in Palestine would help us to continue our work for these students and for the faculty at Birzeit as they seek to develop their society.

Your support is an investment in a viable future for the Palestinian people

  • £175 per semester will cover a student's housing costs

  • £1250 will allow Birzeit University to cover the cost of educating one student for a year

  • Any amount will be appreciated to help us expand our work in support of Palestinian education.
