India-Bangladesh Talks In Dhaka By Shah Abdul Hannan ccun.org, June 29, 2007
Newspapers have reported that New Delhi wants to see a peaceful and democratic Bangladesh as a friendly neighbour, but it does not want to interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affair, said India’s foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon on Tuesday. Responding to a query about India’s position on the current situation under the interim government, he said, ‘We will not interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affair. The people of Bangladesh will decide on their future.’ Talking with newsmen at the state guesthouse Padma, Menon, however, said India always wanted to see Bangladesh as a peaceful, stable and democratic country. The chief adviser earlier said when Indian Foreign secretary met him that Bangladesh would like India to cooperate with Bangladesh on a higher scale over key issues such as water sharing, which is a common concern for both the countries, reported the United News of Bangladesh. He said he is pleased as institutional mechanisms have been reactivated between the two neighbors.Chief Advisor also said, ‘Bangladesh, as a matter of principle, does not allow its territory to be used by forces inimical to the interest of India.’ He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s stand on condemning terrorism in all its forms anywhere in the world.‘Minor irritants should not create hindrance to our friendly relations,’ Mr. Fakhruddin said. We welcome the Indo- Bangladesh talk ad its positive outcome.Bangladesh has never acted against the interest of India or helped Indian insurgents though Indian news papers always blame Bangladesh. We are one with Chief Advisor Mr. Fakhruddin when he said that minor irritants should not create problems in our relations. We should try to solve our problems by mutual discussion . There can be a package solution at one go if we can bring the main issues of both sides such as corridors and water sharing in one agreement
