Embarrassment of the Musharraf Defendants

By Mohammad Khalid

ccun.org, June 20, 2007

Look how Allah Almighty has embarrassed some elements in Pakistani politics. Its recent example is the case against Supreme Court Chief Justice, Chaudhry Iftikhar. The official lawyers’ team, i.e. those defending the President and the ruling government, includes two prominent names; Ahmed Raza Qasuri and Justice Qayum. Apart from Sharifuddin Pirzada, both these gentlemen (?) have some history which needs to be elaborated.

Ahmed Raza Qasuri is the one who won 1970 National Assembly elections on PPP ticket. He was the only member in the entire house who voted against 1973 constitution and this bastard is always proud of that act. He offered General Mohammad Zia ul Haq the dead body of his father to get Bhutto hanged. His godfather Mohammad Zia gave him handsome price for exploitation of the corpse of his nawab father.

The funny part of this story is that this man was not only blue eyed boy of military rulers like Gen. Mohammad Zia and his successors but a leader of Zia-sponsored parties, like Jamaat E Islami, Nawaz League, and Wali Khan’s ANP. Jamaat Islami’s then Amir Mian Tufail even helped Ahmed Raza Qasuri (and Zia) in arranging “APPROVERS” like Mian Abbass and others. Today all these anti-Bhutto forces are “fighting the war for supremacy of constitutional law” and supporting the just cause of Chief Justice, Chaudhry Iftikhar but they don’t have courage to say anything against their old friend Ahmed Raza Qasuri, who helped them in getting rid of their main obstacle to power-ZAB.

Another great man in this team is Justice Retired Malik Abdul Qayyum. He was the hand picked judge of Accountability Court during Nawaz Sharif rule who served the Sharif family under the command of Saifur Rehman’s notorious Accountability Cell. This “judge” played a dirty role in cases against Benazir. Every one in Pakistan is aware of his demand to the then government for issuance of a diplomatic passport. The old corrupt judge had to leave his post after disclosure of his “secret activities” by Pakistani media but remained in touch with the Nawaz party and even during his visits to Saudi Arabia and London used to call on the Sharifs. Now, this loyal friend of the Sharifs is standing on the other side of the court and challenging his old masters. Sharifs and their party are still reluctant to face this man who has got many “political secrets” in his brief case.

Why don’t our politicians adopt a realistic approach and have courage to accept their past mistakes openly and why don’t our media people expose such elements in their historical and true context so that the people of Pakistan know the reality?
