At Least 60 Killed In Al-Shuja'iya
neighborhood of Gaza City, Hundreds Injured
								Sunday July 20, 2014 13:22 by Saed Bannoura -
								IMEMC & Agencies

In what Gazans have already begun to term
								'the Al-Shuja'iya massacre', Israeli occupation
forces strikes in the crowded Gaza City
neighborhood Sunday morning have caused the
deaths of at least 60 Palestinian civilians, 17
of them children and babies, according to
medical sources, and led to a mass exodus of
people walking, running and driving out of Al-Shuja'iya
toward hospitals, schools or anywhere they
thought they could be safe from the constant
								bombing.
The Israeli occupation army is
								continuing to surround Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood
of Gaza city, firing hundreds of shells into
								homes, streets, hospitals and medical
								facilities, and targeted Palestinian ambulances
killing medics, and at least two journalists.

Missiles have directly hit five
ambulances, while several ambulances were fired
								at, and were rendered useless.
Eyewitnesses
said the bodies are everywhere, injured people,
homes turned into rubble, and that every person
seen leaving Al-Shuja’iya, is directly targeted
								by the army.
While most of the Israeli
strikes Sunday morning are focused on Al-Shuja’iya
neighborhood, Israeli occupation forces have not
let up on their bombardment of other parts of
Gaza as well. Casualties have been reported
Sunday in Khan Younis and Rafah, in southern
Gaza, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia, in the
northern part of the Gaza Strip.
A woman
and a young man have been killed after the army
bombarded a home in Khan Younis, and twelve
								children were injured.
The Israeli
occupation army deliberately fired missiles into
homes, causing a large number of casualties, and
even fired shells at dozens of families fleeing
								their homes.
Head of Al-Shifa Hospital
in Gaza said the hospital cannot deal with this
very large number of casualties, as they do not
have enough supplies and equipment, and were
forced to move dozens of patients to other
								hospitals.
Medics are unable to perform
their duty as the army is firing missiles at
them, rendering them unable to provide essential
aid to the wounded, and retrieve the remains of
								slain Palestinians.
Around 25000
Palestinians have been displaced, and are
seeking shelter in hospitals and medical
								centers, amidst ongoing Israeli bombardment.

Calls have been made to the Red Cross to
send ambulances, but it was unable to do so,
while the army threatened any person or vehicle
that moved in the Al-Shuja’iya is a direct
								target for the army.
In an initial
reported, the Ministry of Health said that at
least 40 Palestinians, including children, have
been killed in Al-Shuja'iya in the early morning
hours, and more than 400 wounded, and that the
number of casualties is gradually escalating.

Talking al Al-Jazeera, spokesperson of the
al-Quds Brigades of Hamas Abu Ahmad, said the
large number of remains indicates that the
number of killed Palestinians could be higher
								than 100.
In a statement, the
Palestinian Ministry of Health said that as
Israel escalates its aggression against the
civilians in their communities, in different
parts of the Gaza Strip, it seems Saturday night
and Sunday at dawn have been the most violent of
the 12-day long assault on Gaza.

Israel committing 'war crime' in Gaza's Shuja'iya
		neighborhood
		By Yasser al-Banna

		 Anadolu Agency, 20 July 2014, 12:35
		GAZA CITY
Palestinian resistance group Hamas said Sunday that the Israeli
shelling of residential areas in Al-Shuja'iya neighborhood in eastern
Gaza City amounts to "a war crime."
"The massacre of civilians in Al-Shuja'iya neighborhood [by Israeli
occupation troops] is a war crime," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said
		in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told
Anadolu Agency that at least 60 Palestinians were killed and over 200
others injured in Israeli shelling of residential areas, including Al-Shuja'iya
		neighborhood, in eastern Gaza City.
"This crime would not break the will of the Palestinian people, and
the resistance would continue to inflict heavy damage on the Israeli
		army," Abu Zuhri added.
Dozens of Israeli tanks and military vehicles have forced their way
into the eastern parts of Gaza City amid heavy artillery fire from the
Israeli tanks in the area, prompting thousands of Palestinians to flee
their homes towards the center of the city.
Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that the Israeli troops advanced
into Zaytoon, Toffah and Al-Shuja'iya neighborhood neighborhoods in
eastern Gaza City where they pounded several homes.
The incursion was coupled with heavy fighting between the Israeli
troops and Palestinian resistance fighters, the witnesses added.
Since July 7, the Israeli occupation army has been pounding the Gaza
Strip with devastating air and naval bombardment with the ostensible aim
		of halting rocket fire.
On Thursday, the Israeli occupation army launched a ground assault
into the Palestinian territory, sending thousands of troops into the
		blockades seaside enclave.
At least 398 Palestinians including 83 children and 32 women have
been killed and 4085 others injured in the Israeli attacks on the Gaza
Strip since the start of the Israeli operation.

At least 50 dead in Israeli attack on Gaza district: hospital
		By

		GAZA/JERUSALEM Sun Jul 20, 2014 7:22am EDT
		(Reuters) -
At least 50 Palestinians were killed on Sunday by Israeli shelling in
Al-Shuja'iya Gaza neighborhood, where bodies were strewn in the street
and thousands fled for shelter to a hospital packed with wounded,
		witnesses and health officials said.
As the number of dead mounted,
		Israel
and Gaza's dominant Hamas movement agreed to a two-hour "humanitarian
		truce" in that area, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (6.30 a.m. EDT to 8.30
a.m. EDT), at the request of the Red Cross. Fighting continued elsewhere
		in Gaza.
The mass casualties in Al-Shuja'iya, in northeast Gaza, were the
		heaviest since
		Israel
launched its offensive on the Palestinian territory on July 8 after
cross-border rocket strikes by militants intensified.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the occupied
West Bank, accused Israel of carrying out a massacre and declared three
		days of mourning.
The Israeli military said on Sunday Hamas had deployed rockets and
built tunnels and command centers in Al-Shuja'iya.
"Two days ago, residents of Al-Shuja'iya received recorded messages
to evacuate the area in order to protect their lives," an Israeli
		military spokeswoman said.
Anguished cries of "Did you see Ahmed?" "Did you see my wife?" echoed
through the courtyard of Gaza's Shifa hospital, a where panicked
residents of Al-Shuja'iya gathered in family groups, seeking a safe
haven. Inside, bodies and wounded lay on blood-stained floors.
Elderly men there said the Israeli attack was the fiercest they had
seen since the 1967 Middle East war, when Israel captured Gaza.
		Al-Shifa hospital's director, Naser Tattar, said 17 children, 14
women and four elderly were among the 50 dead, and about 400 people were
		wounded in the Israeli assault.
Gaza's Health Ministry officials said at least 385 Palestinians, many
of them civilians, have been killed in the 13-day conflict and about
		2,600 have been wounded.
On Israel's side, two civilians have been killed by cross-border fire
and five soldiers have died in fighting. More than 50 Israeli troops
have been wounded, hospital officials said.
Thousands fled Al-Shuja'iya, some by foot and others piling into the
backs of trucks and sitting on the hoods of cars filled with families
trying to get away. Several people rode out of the neighborhood of
100,000 in the shovel of a bulldozer.
Video given to Reuters by a local showed at least a dozen corpses,
including three children, lying in rubble-filled streets, though the
footage could not be verified independently.
There were no signs of a breakthrough on diplomatic efforts to get a
permanent ceasefire, and militants kept up their rocket fire on Israel.
Sirens sounded in southern Israeli towns and in the Tel Aviv
metropolitan area. There were no reports of casualties on the Israeli
		side.
Hamas had urged people across the territory not to heed the Israeli
		warnings and abandon their homes.
As the (Israeli) tank shells began to land, Al-Shuja'iya residents
called radio stations pleading for evacuation. An (Israeli) air strike
on Al-Shuja'iya home of Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, killed
his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, hospital officials said.

The Israeli occupation army said Sunday it was expanding its
ground offensive against the Gaza Strip, as the bloodiest conflict since
2009 entered its 13th day with a death toll of over 400, Agence France-Presse
		reported.
“This evening, the ground phase of Operation
Protective Edge expands, as additional forces join the effort to combat
terror in the Gaza Strip and establish a reality in which Israeli
residents can live in safety and security,” the army said in a
		statement.
The Israeli occupation army started the ground offensive late
Thursday, after 10 days of aerial and naval bombardment of the besieged
Palestinian territory, in a bid to stamp out rocket fire from Gaza
		militants.
		Israel confirms ceasefire in Al-Shuja'iya
Israel has agreed to observe an immediate two-hour humanitarian
ceasefire in Gaza’s Shejaiya neighborhood, halting a blistering bombing
campaign in the area, a military spokeswoman said on Sunday.
“There is going to be a humanitarian window between 1:30 and 3:30 (1030
and 1230 GMT) in Shejaiya,” an army spokeswoman said.
Another
military official said the move was in response to a request by the
International Committee of the Red Cross.
Before declaring its intent to ceasefire,  thousands of people fled
the eastern Shuja'iya district, after heavy shelling left casualties
lying in the streets, an AFP correspondent reported.
Ambulances
were unable to reach much of the area along the border because of heavy
		fire, and emergency services said.
There were reports of dead and wounded trapped by the bombardment.
The Hamas military wing said its fighters exchanged fire with Israeli
forces in Shujai'yah and a nearby neighborhood.
A Palestinian cameraman and a paramedic were among those killed in
		Shuja'iya.
“Cameraman Khaled Hammad and paramedic Fuad Jaber were
killed in a strike on an ambulance, while they were trying to evacuate
the wounded from Shejaiya,” Ashraf al-Qudra, the spokesperson for the
emergency services said, according to AFP.

Death toll
Shortly after the announcement, an army statement said two more
soldiers had been killed late Saturday in fighting in and around the
Gaza Strip, naming them as Bar Rahav, 21, and Bnaya Rubel, 20.

A wounded Palestinian man reacts after the death of his
relatives, who medics said were killed in Israeli shelling, at a
hospital in Gaza City July 20, 2014.
Since the ground operation began, seven Israeli soldiers have been
killed, including two in a firefight with Hamas militants inside Israeli
		territory.
Since the start of Israel-Hamas fighting almost two
weeks ago, 361 (see list below) Palestinians were killed and 2,700
wounded in Israeli air and artillery strikes, according to Palestinian
		health officials.
One-fourth of the deaths were reported since the start of the ground
offensive, the officials said, according to the Associated Press.
Israel said it is going to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties
and blames them on Hamas, accusing it of firing from within residential
neighborhoods and using civilians as “human shields.”
