72 Iraqis Killed, 246 Injured, in Attacks, May 27-29, 2013
20 people killed in overnight attack in Iraq BAGHDAD, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Bomb attacks in Iraq overnight killed 20 people and wounded 47, raising the casualties for the day to 38 killed and 91 wounded, the police said on Wednesday. In central Iraq, a car bomb and a roadside bomb struck the popular Shalal market in Shaab district in the northeastern part of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 12, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. In a separate incident, a car bomb and a roadside bomb ripped through a marketplace in Baghdad's southern district of Doura, killing nine people and wounding 34. In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, seven people were killed and 11 wounded when a bomb went off at a popular coffee shop in the town of Hibhib, near the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad. Tuesday overnight attacks raised the toll for the day to 38 people killed and 91 others wounded. Earlier on Tuesday, the police said 18 people were killed and 44 wounded in attacks, including a suicide tanker truck bombing, in central and northern Iraq during the day. Tuesday attacks followed a day of a wave of deadly car bomb attacks that swept Baghdad and killed at least 34 people and wounded some 155. Violence is still common in Iraq despite a dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007, when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
34 killed, 155 wounded in series of car bombings in Iraq's capital BAGHDAD, May 27, 2013 (Xinhua) -- Up to 34 people were killed and 155 others wounded in at least 10 car bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Monday, an interior ministry source said. A car bomb and a roadside bomb ripped through Um al-Maalif area in southern Baghdad, killing up to six people and wounding 34 others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Another car bomb went off in Kadhmiyah district in northern Baghdad, killing two people and wounding eight others, the source said. In central Baghdad, a third car bomb exploded at a popular marketplace near Shorja commercial area, leaving five people killed and 31 others wounded, the source added. Meanwhile, a car bomb went off at a thoroughfare in Baiyaa district in the southern part of the capital, killing two people and wounding nine others, he said. Five civilians were killed and 27 others wounded when two car bombs were detonated in Habibiyah area within the Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, the source added. The six car bomb attacks followed two bombings in the afternoon in the capital. The source said that a car bomb went off in Saadoun Street in downtown Baghdad, killing up to six people and wounding some 14. He also said another car bomb went off near al-Samarrai mosque in New Baghdad district in the southern part of the capital, killing a civilian and wounding nine. Also on Monday, a car bomb went off in Huriya district in northeastern Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 14 others, while another car bomb near a market in Geser Deyla area in southern Baghdad killed four people and wounded nine others, the source said. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks, but the al-Qaida front in Iraq, in most cases, are responsible for massive attacks in the country.
Russia says fresh violence outbreak in Iraq rooted in Syria MOSCOW, May 28, 2013 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that a new outbreak of violence in Iraq is rooted in the ongoing conflict in Syria. The ministry said in a commentary published on its website that over 500 people have been killed in a fresh wave of tensions in Iraq since the beginning of May, adding that Moscow is "seriously disturbed by" the confrontation and strongly condemns the attacks by militants. The rise of tensions is related to the conflict in Syria, which begins to flow across borders and to assume a regional dimension, it said. Russia calls on all political forces in Iraq to reach a national reconciliation in order to prevent bloodshed, destruction and suffering of the people in the country. The ministry also said that Moscow sees what is happening in Iraq as a partial result of the unresolved political, social and religious conflicts aggravated by the foreign invasion of the country in 2003 and the following civil war. Russia calls for the rejection of violence as a means to achieve political goals, for the solution of urgent and pressing problems of the country by peaceful means via a broad constructive dialogue "in the interests of all political, ethnic and religious forces," said the ministry. ============================== 519 Iraqis Killed, 1,300 Injured in Attacks, During May 29, Fair Use Notice This site contains copyrighted material the
