Rogue 'soldier' kills two NATO troops in Afghanistan

By News Wires (text)

France 24, 26/03/2012

AFP -

Two NATO soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan on Monday by a man wearing an Afghan army uniform, a statement by the Western alliance said. Monday's shooting is the latest in a series of "insider attacks" against US-led forces in the country.

A man wearing Afghan army uniform shot dead two soldiers from NATO's US-led force in southern Afghanistan on Monday, a military spokesman said.

The deaths come after a series of "green-on-blue" attacks involving Afghan troops targeting their international allies, who are scheduled to hand over responsibility for national security to the Afghans by the end of 2014.

"An individual wearing Afghan army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing two," ISAF spokesman Major Jason Waggoner told AFP.

Coalition forces returned fire and killed the gunman, he added, declining to specify the victims' nationality.

A senior Afghan official told AFP the incident happened inside a US-run base used by civilian and military personnel working in a provincial reconstruction team in Lashkar Gah, the main town in Helmand province.

An ISAF statement released in Kabul said a joint Afghan and NATO investigation had been opened into the killings.

Man in army uniform kills 2 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan

KABUL, March 26, 2012 (Xinhua) --

A man in Afghan army uniform shot dead two soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan on Monday, a press release of the alliance said.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing two service members, " the press release added.

"The individual who opened fire was killed when coalition forces returned fire. A joint Afghan and ISAF team is investigating the incident," the press release further said.

However, it did not identify the nationalities of the victims, saying it is ISAF's policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities. Troops mostly from U.S., Britain and Australia have been stationed in the restive southern provinces of Afghanistan.

It is the eighth time so far this year that men in Afghan army and police uniform opened fire and have killed 13 NATO service members in the militancy-plagued Afghanistan.
