Bomb attacks claim 17 lives in Iraq

At least 15 people have been killed and scores of others injured as two bomb explosions ripped through Iraq's northern province of Diyala.

Fifteen people were killed and are 64 others wounded when a bomber rammed an explosives-laden ambulance into a security headquarters in the middle of Baquba, located some 50 km (30 miles) to the northeast of the capital Baghdad, AFP reported on Wednesday.

The attack occurred at around 10:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT). An unnamed security official said the attack targeted an office of the Force Protection Service. The agency is in charge of providing security for Iraqi government buildings.

Separately, two people were killed and a top provincial official was wounded when a bombing attack happened in a nearby town.

Baquba, the capital of Diyala province, has been the scene of frequent shootings and bombings. The city was as an urban bastion of al-Qaeda in Iraq as recently as 2008.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is a shadowy group reportedly led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. But some reports say Zarqawi was killed in June 2006.

According to US government and military officials, the group was then led by Ayyub al-Masri, who was killed along with Abu Omar al-Baghdadi -- another leader of the group -- in a joint Iraqi-US operation in Salahuddin province in April 2010.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been blamed for some of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the country since the US-led invasion of the country in 2003.

An Iraqi Soldier was Killed

American occupation forces executed an Iraqi soldier who killed two of its soldiers two days ago in the southern Mosul. A government source said that "The American forces handed over the body of the Iraqi soldier who was killed two U.S. soldiers in south of Mosul."

It added that: "the forensic medicine department in Mosul received the body of the Iraqi soldier in military uniforms with gunshot wounds."
The Iraqi soldier killed two American occupation soldiers and wounded another in Ghazalani training center, located in south of Mosul on Saturday.

Katyusha Missiles Targets Warhorse Base

Two Katyusha rockets targeted military airbase of the American occupation forces in Warhorse base in al Sabtiyya area of northern Baquba city. Government security sources confirmed the attack without referring the details on the casualties. It added that American occupation and police forces cordoned off the area where rockets were fired in Shafta area of southwestern Baquba.

Katyusha Targets the Green Zone

Katyusha rockets landed near the Palais des Congrès located in the Green Zone where smoke was seen rising from the scene. Eyewitnesses also said they have heard the sound of ambulances rushing to the scene.

The so-called Green Zone includes the current government institutions and occupation forces.

Suicide bombing kills 2 visitors, injures 15 in Diala

At least two civilians were killed and 15 others were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack that targeted Shi'i visitors heading to Karbala on the road linking between Diala and Baghdad, a security source said on Wednesday.

"A suicide bomber blew up a car rigged with explosives targeting Shiite visitors heading to Karbala to commemorate the Arbaeen visit in al-Kasrien region on the road linking Diala and Baghdad, killing two civilians and injuring 15, including deputy chairman of the Diala council Sadeq al-Husseini," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The Arbaeen is a religious occasion marking the 40 th day after the death of Imam al-Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third holiest figure for Shiite Muslims, in the battle of Taf in Karbala in the Hegira year 61 (680 in the Gregorian calendar).

Meanwhile, the death toll of the suicide attack on the police compound in Diala rose 8 dead and 55 wounded.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

3 killed, 18 wounded in Diala suicide attack

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three persons were killed and 18 others were wounded Wednesday in the suicide car bomb attack in Ba'aquba, the second targeting Iraq's security forces in two days, a security source said.

"A suicide bomber blew up a car crammed with explosives targeting a police compound in Baaquba al-Jadieda neighborhood, central Baaquba, killing three and injuring 18," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"Security forces cordoned off the scene and carried the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added.

On Tuesday, a suicide bomber killed some 54 people at a police recruitment centre in Tikrit.
Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
