Arab League Calls on UN Security Council to Impose No-Fly Zone on Gaza to Protect Palestinian Civilians from Israeli Attacks

Bahar demands expediting the no-fly zone decision

 [ 11/04/2011 - 06:32 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

First deputy speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council Dr. Ahmed Bahar has urged the Arab League to expedite issuing a UN Security Council resolution imposing a no-fly zone over the Gaza Strip to protect Palestinian civilians from Israeli crimes.

Describing the decision as an advanced step in the right direction, he said in a press release on Monday that it would pave the way before isolating Israel in the international arena.

He asked the Arab League to rally international support for the decision and to discuss its implementation mechanics.

Bahar stressed the importance of implementing Arab League resolutions concerning ending the siege on Gaza, opening the Rafah crossing permanently, and starting reconstruction of the beleaguered Strip.

In an earlier statement on Monday while extending condolences to the martyrs of the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, he blamed the feeble position of the international community for the recent Israeli military escalation against Gaza.

Bahar also said that resistance is guaranteed for all peoples under occupation by international law, adding that all Palestinian resistance factions were united in one trench against the Israeli aggression.

Arab League urges Gaza no-fly zone

Published yesterday (updated) 11/04/2011 19:55 CAIRO (Ma'an) --

The Arab League Council called on the UN Security Council Sunday to consider an air embargo on Israeli military flights over Gaza, reports said.

The council's appeal, submitted by Syria at a special meeting in Cairo, asks the Security Council to immediately convene to adopt a resolution enforcing a no-fly zone, the Syrian news agency SANA reported late Sunday.

The initiative is aimed at protecting unarmed civilians, ending the siege imposed on the Strip and stresses the Palestinian people's right to resist the Israeli occupation, according to the news outlet.

The Arab League body condemned Israel's "plotted barbaric aggression" on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip as part of a series of "frequent crimes" violating international legitimacy and laws, SANA said.

It also expressed astonishment at the international community's "suspicious silence."

In the region, meanwhile, both Israeli and Palestinian officials expressed support for a potential ceasefire, after days of rocket fire and Israeli air raids that have killed at least 18 people in Gaza.
