Entrances to the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan were closed off Tuesday when clashes erupted between settlers and Palestinian residents of the area.

 

Violence was focused in the Wad Hilwa quarter, after locals said a settler assaulted a man on his way to work sparking a brief street scuffle between Palestinian residents and Israeli settlers who allegedly provoked passersby and assaulted them.

 

Director of the Wad Hilwa Information Center Jawad Siyam said Israeli police arrived on the scene shortly after the fight and closed off the entrances to the neighborhood, prohibiting pedestrian and vehicle traffic from passing in or out.

 

Siyam said tension was palpable in the area and said he expected clashes to erupt anew as soldiers maintained a heavy presence on the streets. Detentions in the Old City In the African Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City, relatives of Nasser Abu Qaws, head of Palestinian prisoner society, said Israeli forces entered the home and detained Nasser's 35-year-old wife Dina.

 

Soldiers also left detention warrants to Nasser himself and his son 17-year-old Ziad, he said. Abu Qaws recovering in Jerusalem's Al-Maqasid Hospital following heart surgery, he said.

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)--

Israeli occupation police on Tuesday rounded up 34 Palestinians in Silwan suburb, occupied Jerusalem, following violent confrontations in that troubled neighborhood, Hebrew media reported.

The Israeli radio said that different detention periods were accorded to those detainees ranging from 2 to 6 days until indictments are leveled against them for participation in clashes with the police forces.

Local sources said that Israeli policemen broke into one of the houses and detained its occupants and prevented citizens from approaching it, quoting the policemen as saying they were looking for the teen Mohammed Ghaith.
