BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A traffic police officer was killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to his vehicle went off in central Baghdad on Saturday, a local security source said.

“The IED went off on 52 street in the area of al-Karrada, central Baghdad, leaving the officer killed instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion also caused severe damage to the vehicle and other nearby vehicles,” he said.

4 civilians wounded in Mosul blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Four civilians were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a federal police patrol in western Mosul city on Saturday, a local security source said.

“An IED went off just as a federal police patrol was passing by in the area of al-Zanjili, western Mosul, leaving four civilian men wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“None of the patrol men was hurt in the incident,” he said, adding the wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-ridden multi-ethnic province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian shot dead near his house in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian man was shot down by unidentified gunmen fire in front of his house in western Mosul city on Saturday, a local police source in Ninewa said.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire on a civilian man in front of his house in al-Amil neighborhood, western Mosul, killing him instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The victim used to work as a driver of a cab on the Baghdad-Mosul road and carry army and police personnel from their units in Mosul to their houses in Baghdad,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of the troubled multi-ethnic province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

5 policemen wounded, explosive belt defused in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Five policemen were wounded in two separate incidents in eastern and southern Baghdad while an explosive belt was defused near a mosque in Sadr City on Friday, according to a local security source.

“Unidentified gunmen hurled a hand-grenade at a police patrol in the area of al-Mashtal, southeastern Baghdad, leaving three patrolmen wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A sticky improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a police vehicle in al-Baladiyat neighborhood, eastern Baghdad, leaving two policemen wounded,” he added.

The source also said that the police seized an explosive belt inside a bag near al-Ridwan mosque in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City.

“The bomb squad personnel defused the blet,” he added.

Policemen shoot dead suicide bomber before attacking Mosul mosque

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A police force shot down a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt before attacking worshippers performing the Friday prayers at al-Nabi Shiet Mosque in central Mosul city.

“A suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt and clad in police uniform tried to attack al-Nabi Shiet Mosque in central Mosul but policemen shot him dead,” a security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A policeman was killed and another and a civilian worshipper were wounded in the incident,” he added.

“The blast also left damage to the mosque fence,” the source said.

Mosul, the capital city of the volatile province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Suicide attack kills, injures three people in central Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: One policeman was killed and a civilian and another policeman were wounded in a suicide explosion in central Mosul, according to a security source.

“A suicide bomber, wearing an explosive belt strapped to his body, tried today (Sept. 24) to storm al-Nabi Shiet mosque in central Mosul to target civilians while performing the Friday Prayer,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that the mosque’s guards opened fire at him, detonating the explosive belt at the mosque’s gate, killing a cop and injuring a civilian and another cop.

“The blast damaged the mosque wall,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Katyusha rocket wounds 5 civilians in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: Five civilians were wounded when a Katyusha rocket hit a region in southwest of Kirkuk, a source from the joint coordination center in Kirkuk said on Friday.

“The rocket hit a house in al-Huweija district, southwest of Kirkuk, late Thursday (Sept. 23) injuring five civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Policemen managed at 1:00am on Friday to free a kidnapped policeman, Walied Ghazi al-Meaamari,” the source added, noting that his kidnappers fled to unknown place.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill officer, injure his wife in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Unknown gunmen killed a police colonel and injured his wife in northern Baghdad, a police source said on Friday.

“Colonel Hazem Saleh was killed and his wife was wounded when gunmen opened fire at them while driving their car near Zeraa Dejla bridge in northern Baghdad late Thursday (Sept. 23),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen fled to unknown area,” he added.
