PESHAWAR:

Ten Taliban fighters (referred by the pro-government Daily Times as terrorists) and three security personnel were killed on Wednesday in an ongoing military operation in Frontier Region (FR) Peshawar, security sources said.

The latest killings bring to 52 the total number of  Taliban fighters deaths, sources said. Security forces’ casualties stand at five dead and four injured. The forces cleared the Pastawana area, which is the hub of terrorists in FR Peshawar, and recovered 25 improvised explosives devices, mortars and an explosive-laden vehicle which was to be used in a suicide attack.

Sources said security forces were busy clearing Pakhi area of terrorists. FR Peshawar is situated on the southeast of the provincial capital and shares borders with Kohat, Darra Adamkhel and Nowshehra. On February 24, Frontier Constabulary had launched an operation in the area that ended on March 5. At least 38 Taliban fighters were killed in the operation. Adezai Qaumi Aman Jirga chief Dilawar Khan told Daily Times that about 74 terrorists had been killed in the recent operation. The jirga is taking part in the cleanup along with security forces. He claimed that the Taliban were challenging the writ of the state in FR and had been forcing women to wear three types of burqas, which distinguished them according to age and marital status. He said the group was also forcing local girls to marry its fighters and had ordered residents to keep their doors open at night.

Khan said the operation will be concluded within three days and claimed that most Taliban fighters had fled the area. Noting that locals were left on the mercy of terrorists after such operations, he called for the establishment of Frontier Constabulary headquarter in the region to prevent their return. He said, “At least 50 percent of people from FR Peshawar have migrated to safer places due to the fear of Taliban.”
