Suicide attack kills 2 Sahwa fighters, injures 3 in Samarra

Two Sahwa fighters were killed and three others were wounded in a suicide bombing attack in Samarra on Thursday, according to a security source.

“A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body on Thursday (Sept. 16) inside the main headquarters of Sahwa (Awakening) in al-Muaalameen neighborhood in central Samarra, killing two fighters and injuring three more,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more details.

Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din, is 175 km north of Baghdad.

3 cops wounded in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three policemen were wounded on Thursday in two explosions in southwestern Kirkuk, a police officer said.

“Two bombs went off simultaneously on Thursday morning (Sept. 16) targeting a vehicle patrol of Kirkuk emergency police in the celebrations square in southwestern Kirkuk, injuring three cops, including a major,” Colonel Ghazi Ali told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion damaged one of the patrol’s vehicles,” he added.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

U.S. patrol attacked in Hilla

A U.S. patrol was attacked on Wednesday by an explosive charge in eastern Hilla, a police source said on Thursday.

“The bomb, planted on the road linking Hilla with the highway, eastern Hilla, went off on Wednesday (Sept. 15) targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The forces cordoned off the area,” he added, with no word on casualties or damage.

Hilla, the capital of Babel, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.

Police find unknown corpse in Mosul

Policemen found on Wednesday a body of an unknown man in eastern Mosul, according to a security source.

“Police forces found Wednesday evening (Sept. 15) a body of an unknown man in al-Maared region, eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body of a 30-year-old man bore signs of gunshot wounds to the head and chest,” he added, without giving further details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Ansar al-Islam group kills Sardasht Othman – committee

The investigation committee on the assassination of Journalist Sardasht Othman announced on Wednesday the arrest of a member of the Ansar al-Islam armed group, who underlined that he took part in killing the journalist as he refused to work with the group.

“Asayesh forces arrested Hesham Mahmoud Islamil, a Kurd, from Baiji city, north of Tikrit, with the participation of security forces,” a source from the committee told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He confessed to taking part in the assassination of Othman as he refused to cooperate with the group.

Ansar al-Islam is a militant armed group that had been founded in December 2001 and has links with Al-Qaeda Organization. The group has been included on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations. Its headquarters in a bumpy mountainous areas in Iraqi Kurdistan region, near the borders with Iran, have come under intensive U.S. air raids during the ouster of the Saddam Hussein regime in March 2003.

Sardasht Othman 23,The second independent Kurdish journalist assassinated within two years in Kurdistan region of Iraq. He was publishing his critical articles of the officials in Kurdistan under various nicknames in the websites, magazines, newspaper such as Kurdistanpost, Lvin, Hawlaty, Peace letters, Tomorrow…etc. He was a student in the University as well. After he received threats of killing he was kidnapped from the university in Arbil On 3rd of May 2010 and 3 days later his body was found in Mosul city.

Civilian killed, 4 wounded in Falluja

One civilian was killed and four others, from the same family, were wounded when gunmen blew up their house in eastern Falluja on Wednesday, according to a police source.

“Unknown gunmen blew up a house of an employee using bombs, TNT and C4 in al-Haswa region, eastern Falluja, killing the employee and injuring two women and two children,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast damaged nearby houses,” he added.

Falluja, Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill employee in Mosul

An employee working for the electricity power department was killed on Wednesday by gunmen in south of Mosul, a police source said.

“The employee was killed on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 15) when gunmen stormed his house in al-Qayara district in south of Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

4 civilians injured in blast in Baghdad

Four civilians were wounded on Wednesday when a roadside bomb went off in central Baghdad.

“The blast occurred in the al-Karada neighborhood, central Baghdad,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He explained that the blast caused damage to a number of nearby shops and civilian cars.

The source did not mention further details.

US vehicle devastated in Karbala

One U.S. vehicle was devastated on Wednesday when a roadside bomb went off targeting a convoy of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (P.R.T) north of Karbala city.

“The blast took place at the al-Husseiniya area, 20 km north of Karbala,” a local media source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He explained that U.S. forces cordoned the blast area.

“No information so far about casualties,” he added.

The holly city of Krabala lies 110 km southwest of Baghdad.

9 Iraqi soldiers killed in blast in Mosul

Nine Iraqi soldiers were killed on Wednesday and five others wounded when a roadside bomb went off west of Mosul city.

“The blast took place near the al-Zilzal village, 35 km west of Mosul, targeting a civilian bus that was delivering soldiers in a vacation to their home,” an army source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He explained that in addition to the 14 casualties, the bus driver was wounded as well.

Iraqi-US force came from Baghdad to arrest wanted man in Falluja – source

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

The Iraqi-US force that killed seven civilians and wounded four others in Falluja came from Baghdad to arrest a wanted man in the city, a local police source said on Wednesday.

“The operation was conducted without any coordination with security forces in Anbar province,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Seven civilians, including a woman and two children, were killed and four others, including an 85 year old woman, were wounded when an Iraqi-U.S. force coming from Baghdad raided an area south of Falluja city.

“The raid operation took place late yesterday night in the al-Jibail area, south of Falluja,” said another local police source.He explained that a lieutenant colonel of the former Iraqi army is among the seven dead victims.

“The force took away four of the dead bodies,” the source added.

He noted that the force also destroyed a number of civilian vehicles during the operation.Falluja, the biggest city of Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.
