MAKHACHKALA, October 14, 2010 (RIA Novosti)

Three police officers were killed and one was injured in a clash with militants in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the republic's interior ministry said.

The shootout began on Wednesday evening, when a police unit was combing woodland near the village of Agvali. There are no reports of casualties among militants.

Attacks and shootouts with police are common in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republics, especially in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia.

The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militant groups while stepping up efforts to boost the local economy.

Press TV, Thu Oct 14, 2010, 1:1AM

At least three police officers have been killed and one sustained injuries in fresh clashes between Russian police and rebels in the restive North Caucasus region of Russia.

An exchange of fire broke out on Wednesday close to the village of Agvali, the administrative center of Tsumadinsky district in the Republic of Dagestan, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday.

The police came across the rebels as they were carrying out a research operation in a forest, a local Interior Ministry official said.

Police are continuing their search for more rebels.

Sporadic attacks and clashes are common in Russia's North Caucasus republics.

Russia has been fighting militants in the North Caucasus since the mid 1990s, including two separatist wars in Chechnya.
