U.S. soldier killed in military operation

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One U.S. soldier was killed on Monday during a military operation, raising the U.S. fatalities in May to 4, the U.S. army said in a statement.

“One U.S. Soldier was killed Monday while conducting operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense,” it added.

The death has brought the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,399, including 4 in May 2010.

Roadside bomb hits US convoy in Kut

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

A roadside bomb went off on Monday targeting a U.S. convoy north of Kut city.

“The blast occurred around 40 km north of Kut city,” a local security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He noted that casualties are unknown because U.S. servicemen started shooting randomly, cordoned the area, and prevented anyone from getting closer.

Kut, the capital city of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

Iraqi MP shot dead in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 24, 2010 (Xinhua) -- A election winner of Iraqia List was killed by gunmen Monday in Mosul, the capital city of Iraq's Nineveh province, a local police source said.

Bashar al-Ouqeidi, a newly-elected member of parliament was killed by unidentified gunmen in front of his house, the killer fled the scene immediately, the police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Ouqeidi was the youngest winner of Iraqia List in Mosul.

The cross-sectarian Iraqia List bloc won the most 91 seats in the March 7 parliamentary elections, only 2 seats more than the State of Law alliance led by incumbent Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki, but it is not clear yet whether the loss of one elected member can be replaced by others of Iraqia List.
