Gaza Child killed by Israeli fire, several reported injured

Published today (updated) 30/03/2010 13:37

Gaza – Ma'an –

A child was shot dead by Israeli occupation terrorist forces east of the Yasser Arafat International Airport in Rafah on Tuesday, medics said.

Mu'awiya Hassanain, director of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza, said Muhammed Zain Ismail Al-Faramawi, 15, was shot dead near the southeasterly border by Israeli forces.

Hassanain said ambulances are still unable to retrieve the body because of ongoing clashes in the area.

Locals said dozens of Palestinians sustained injuries when Israeli forces opened fire on a number of marches across Gaza, heading to the borders, marking the 34th anniversary of Land Day in which six Palestinians with Israeli citizenship were killed by Israeli forces during demonstrations protesting land confiscation.

Witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire directly at protesters east of Khan Younis and Al-Maghazi refugee camp in southern Gaza.

The marches were organized by the Popular Committee Against the Buffer Zone in Rafah and Khan Younis in southern Gaza, and Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya to the north.

An Israeli military spokesman told Ma'an he would look into the reports.

Mahmud Al-Zaq, coordinator of the Popular Committee Against the Buffer Zone said six peaceful marches were launched at the same time across all Gaza districts, heading toward Israel.

"We are 200 meters from the border, with groups of young men heading the marches, waving Palestinian flags," he said.

Walid Al-Awad, member of the Palestine People's Party's politburo, said hundreds of Palestinians participated in the march to confirm that the Palestinian people are united against Israel's occupation.

Palestinian medical sources in the Gaza Strip reported Tuesday morning that a child was shot and killed by Israeli occupation forces fire in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

The child was identified as Muhammed Zaid Al Faramawi, 15, from Qishtat neighborhood in Rafah.

Local sources reported that the child was shot by Israeli soldiers after he crossed through the border fence, east of the Gaza International Airport.

Medics rushed to the scene but the child was already dead when they arrived; his body was moved to Abu Yousuf Al-Najjar in Rafah.

On Saturday, a 5-year-old child died at a local hospital due to the ongoing illegal Israeli siege on the coastal region.

The child, Fuad Suwaireh, 5, suffered respiratory issues, and Israeli prevented his transfer to hospitals outside the besieged and war- torn Gaza Strip.

Suwaireh is from Al-Nussairat refugee camp, in central Gaza.

The doctors were trying to have him transferred to an Israeli hospital but Israel rejected all applications.
