Argentina Slams Israeli Building of 1,600 Housing Units in an Illegal Settlement on Palestinian Lands, in East Jerusalem

Bethlehem - Ma'an -

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship condemned on Friday Israel's decision to construct 1,600 new housing units in an East Jerusalem settlement, which is illegally built on Palestinian lands.

"Argentina strongly deplores the announcement of the decision of the Israeli Government to construct 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem," a statement read.

"The Israeli decision to continue the construction of settlements in East Jerusalem contravenes the International law, violates the Security Council and the UN General Assembly Resolutions, and constitutes an obstacle for the resumption of peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians."

The statement added that the Argentine government calls on Israel to halt the construction of the illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories "as a proof of her commitment to the agreements and the Middle East peace process, and recognition of the efforts of the International Community for a just and lasting peace in the region."

The latest condemnation follows a series of similar statements issued by the international community. On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon denounced the move, saying in a statement that "settlements are illegal under international law."

Ban stressed that "settlement activity is contrary to Israel's obligations under the Road Map and undermines any movement towards a viable peace process."

The Middle East diplomatic Quartet further condemned on Friday Israel's plans, the Associated Press reported.

The group, comprised of the EU, US, Russia and UN said it "condemns Israel's decision to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem."

"The Quartet reaffirms that unilateral actions taken by either party cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations and will not be recognized by the international community," it added in a statement.
