Statement of Organizing for America-Georgia on Progress Toward Wall Street Reform OFA Director LeJamiel Goodall June 28, 2010
Early this morning, the House and Senate Conference Committee came to an agreement on a Wall Street Reform bill. OFA State Director LeJamiel Goodall released the following statement: “The Wall Street Reform bill represents a major victory for families on Main Street. As part of the bill, a new Consumer Protection Bureau will be created, the sole purpose of which is to enforce new consumer protection regulations and protect hard-working Americans from devious lending practices. Credit card companies will no longer be able to mislead people through fine print, mortgage companies will now be forced to provide clear and concise information to homeowners, and the riskiest trading practices of Wall Street firms will now be conducted with unprecedented oversight and transparency. “For months OFA volunteers across the country have joined with President Obama in calling on Congress to pass meaningful, comprehensive reforms to protect American families from the worst abuses of big banks and credit card companies that sent our economy into a downward spiral and left ordinary folks reeling. This is meaningful, fair, and comprehensive Wall Street reform that empowers consumers and makes sure American families are never again left footing the bill for the mistakes and greed of bankers on Wall Street.” The bill will now be voted on by the House and Senate before being sent to the President for his signature. Organizing for America (OFA) is a grassroots project of the Democratic National Committee. OFA's network of volunteers and staff is actively working in all 50 states to promote the President's proposals to strengthen America's middle class by creating jobs, passing health insurance reform, building a clean energy economy, improving education, and reining in the excesses of Wall Street.
