41 Iraqis Killed, 113 Injured in Attacks July 7, 2010 Cop killed, 7 wounded by roadside bomb blast in Ninewa July 7, 2010 - 06:51:16 NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: One policeman was killed and seven more were wounded in a roadside bomb blast in south of Mosul, a security source said on Wednesday. “The bomb exploded in al-Qayara district, south of Mosul, on Wednesday evening (July 7), killing a policeman and injuring seven civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The explosion occurred spontaneously near a café in the district,” he added, without giving further details. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. SH (P) Northern Baghdad attack leaves 96 casualties July 7, 2010 - 06:32:52 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Casualties from the suicide explosion in northern Baghdad on Wednesday went up to 28 dead and 68 wounded, according to a security source. A security source had said earlier that a bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body amid a group of Shiite pilgrims heading for Imam Moussa al-Kadhim shrine near Jisr al-Aiema (Bridge of Imams) in al-Aadhamiya region, northern Baghdad, killing 3 pilgrims and injuring 12. Tens of thousands of Shiite worshippers streamed into the Iraqi capital earlier in the day amid heavy security for the pilgrimage, a day after six people were killed in violence. In April 2009, two female suicide bombers detonated their payloads near the shrine, killing 65 people, including 20 Iranian pilgrims, and wounding 120 others. Shiites throughout Iraq and from the worldwide are heading for the al-Kadhimiya City in Baghdad on the occasion of the Imam Moussa al-Kadhim’s anniversary. Imam Moussa al-Kadhim, (Seventh of Safar, 128 AH- Twenty-fifth of Rajab, 183 AH) (Approximately: October 28, 746 AD-September 1, 799 AD), the seventh of the Twelve Shiite Imams. Imam Kadhim was the son of the sixth Shiite Imam, Ja’far al-Sadiq, and his mother’s name was Hamida Khatoon. He was born during the power struggles between the Umayyad and the Abbasid dynasties. In 795, Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid imprisoned Moussa al-Kadhim. Four years later, he ordered Sindi ibn Shahiq to poison him. He died in a prison in Baghdad in 799 and was buried in Baghdad’s al-Karkh district in an area named after him: al-Kadhimiya. A stampede on Jisr al-Aiema (Bridge of Imams), leading to the tomb of Imam Kadhim in the town in 2005 killed more than 1,000 people and wounded 300 others, also causing part of the bridge to collapse. SH (S) Bomber kills 3 pilgrims, injures 12 in Baghdad July 7, 2010 - 06:17:52 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Three Shiite pilgrims were killed and 12 were wounded in a suicide explosion in northern Baghdad on Wednesday, according to a security source. “A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body amid a group of Shiite pilgrims heading for Imam Moussa al-Kadhim shrine near Jisr al-Aiema (Bridge of Imams) in al-Aadhamiya region, northern Baghdad, killing three and wounding 12,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Another security source said that a bomb exploded in al-Fadiliya region, southwestern Baghdad, injuring six visitors. Attacks on Shiite visitors continue in Baghdad, where scores of people were killed or wounded in the past few days. SH (P) Bomb wounds 4 Shiite pilgrims south of Baghdad July 7, 2010 - 05:59:01 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Four Shiite pilgrims were wounded on Wednesday in a bomb blast in south of Baghdad, according to a security source. “The bomb explode in Baghdad al-Jadieda region, south of Baghdad,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Three people were killed and 25 were wounded on Tuesday (July 6) in attacks on Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad despite security measures to protect them. SH (P) Civilian gunned down in Mosul July 7, 2010 - 04:17:46 NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: One civilian was killed on Wednesday by unknown armed men in western Mosul, according to a security source. “Unidentified gunmen killed a civilian on Wednesday afternoon (July 7) in al-Islah neighborhood in western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The victim was visiting one of his relatives in the region when the gunmen shot him,” he added. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. SH (P) Main roads in Falluja sealed off as gunmen kill cop July 7, 2010 - 04:07:55 ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq: Security forces sealed off the main road in the city of Falluja after a cop was killed by a pistol with silencer in the city on Wednesday, according to a security source. “Unknown gunmen shot and killed a policeman in al-Shuhadaa neighborhood in south of Falluja,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Policemen and army forces sealed off the main road in Nezal and al-Shuahadaa neighborhoods and parts of al-Senaai (industrial) region,” he noted. Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SH (P) Civilian killed, 2 wounded by IED in Diala July 7, 2010 - 03:20:55 DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: One civilian was killed and two more were wounded Wednesday by an improvised explosive device blast in north of Baaquba, a police source said. “An explosive device went off on Wednesday (July 7) near a civilian car in Nada region in al-Saadiya district, north of Baaquba, killing a civilian and injuring two others onboard,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that one of the wounded is in critical condition. Baaquba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SH (P) 5 soldiers killed, injured in Falluja attack July 7, 2010 - 01:38:02 ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq: One soldier was killed and four others were wounded in the car bomb explosion in east of Falluja, a police source said on Wednesday. “A suicide bomber blew up a car crammed with explosives targeting a checkpoint in al-Khums Biyout region, east of Falluja, killing a soldier and injuring four,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “A security source had said earlier that a suicide bomber blew up a car bomb near a checkpoint of the Baghdad Operations Command in east of Falluja, leaving unspecified number of casualties. SH (P) Suicide car bomb attack leaves casualties east of Falluja July 7, 2010 - 01:22:59 ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq: A car bomb went off on Wednesday near a checkpoint of the Baghdad Operations Command in east of Falluja, leaving a number of casualties, according to a security source. “A suicide bomber blew up a car bomb near a checkpoint in al-Khums Biyout region, east of Falluja, leaving unspecified number of casualties,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He did not give further details. SH (P) 3 Iraqi soldiers injured in blast in Baghdad July 7, 2010 - 10:34:24 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Three Iraqi army soldiers were wounded when a roadside bomb went off on Wednesday in western Baghdad. “The blast occurred in the Nafaq al-Shurtta area in western Baghdad,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He noted that the blast caused damage to the soldiers’ vehicle, in addition to nearby shops. MH (P)/SR Police officer killed in blast in Baghdad July 7, 2010 - 10:09:01 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: An Iraqi police officer was killed on Wednesday when a sticky bomb attached to his car went off in southern Baghdad. “The bomb was attached to the officer’s civilian car,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He noted that the blast occurred in al-Daura neighborhood, southern Baghdad. “The officer died instantantly, and his car was totally devastated,” the source added. MH (P)/SR 3 Shiite pilgrims killed, 13 wounded in Baghdad on Tuesday July 7, 2010 - 07:51:12 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Three Shiite pilgrims were killed and 13 others were wounded while recognizing a religious occasion in Baghdad on Tuesday. “Three pilgrims were killed and eight others were wounded when a mortar shell hit the al-Kadhimiya neighborhood in northern Baghdad Tuesday evening,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Four pilgrims were wounded when a roadside bomb went off targeting a crowd of pilgrims in the same neighborhood,” the source added. “One more pilgrim was wounded when another roadside bomb went off at the Mohammed al-Qassim highway, central Baghdad,” the source continued.
