US drones kill 12 Taliban in North, South Waziristan

The Daily Times, Pakistan, July 26, 2010

DERA ISMAIL KHAN:

An unmanned US drone fired missiles at houses in two separates parts of the country’s northwest on Sunday, killing at least 12 Taliban in attacks that occurred hours apart, intelligence officials said.

The first strike on Sunday took place around midday when a drone fired four missiles at a house in Shaktoi, a village along the border of North and South Waziristan, killing five suspected Taliban, officials said.

The attack, which actually occurred in South Waziristan, also wounded four suspects, the officials added.

Later in the day, two missiles hit a house in Taipi village near Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan, killing seven suspected Taliban, the officials said.

The strikes came a day after US missiles targeted a compound in Nazai Narai area of South Waziristan, killing 16 suspects.

The hideout was known to be frequented by foreign fighters who were among the dead, intelligence officials said.

The US refuses to publicly acknowledge the covert CIA-run drone programme in the country, but officials have said privately that it has killed several senior Taliban and al Qaeda figures. ap

HANGU:

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jets bombed various parts of Upper Orakzai Agency on Sunday, killing 15 (Taliban fighters who are referred to by pro-government media as terrorists) and injuring 12 others.

According to security sources, the fighter jets bombed the Mamoozai, Khadezai, Dabori and Ali Khel areas in Upper Orakzai Agency. Three hideouts of terrorists were destroyed in the bombings.

The Pakistan Army launched military operations in Swat and South Waziristan, which have proved to be successful.

The Taliban and its allies have been dealt with serious blows in the military operation. PAF fighter jets regularly bomb terrorist hideouts in Orakzai Agency to clear the area of extremists. Local residents have also established groups to drive out terrorists from the area.
