Monday, July 19, 2010

ISLAMABAD:

A suicide bomber ran past guards at Imam Bargah in Sargodha and blew himself up amongst worshippers, injuring 15 people, officials said on Sunday.

Government official Zulfikar Shah said guards at the Imam Bargah tried to stop the suicide bomber, but he evaded them, AP reported.

Sargodha police chief Bashir Ahmad said eight people had been taken to the hospital, of which two were in a critical condition.

The attacker apparently was not more than 17 years of age, he added.

“The blast occurred at a imambargah at the time of evening prayers,” senior police official Matiullah Jan told AFP.

“Fifteen people were injured in the bomb blast and they were moved to a hospital in our ambulances,” rescue service official Mohammad Shakeel told AFP.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack, calling it an attempt by terrorists to trigger sectarian violence.

The president directed provision of best possible medical facilities to the injured and also asked the authorities concerned to investigate the attack.

Gilani said the terrorists wanted to fan sectarian clashes, but the whole nation was united to foil their nefarious designs.

Earlier this month, terrorists attacked Data Darbar in Lahore, killing over 40 people. agencies
