MUTHANNA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman killed an officer at the Police Academy in al-Samawa on Saturday in a “purely criminal” incident, according to a spokesman for the province’s police department.

“The policeman entered on Saturday the room of an officer in the rank of captain in Police Academy headquarters in southern Samawa and fired two bullets at him from his personal gun, killing him instantly and managed to escape outside the academy,” security sources told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Khalid Ojail, the spokesman for the Muthanna police, told Aswat al-Iraq that the culprit was arrested in Samawa one hour after he committed his crime.

2 civil servants wounded in Baghdad blast

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two housing ministry employees were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to their vehicle went off in northern Baghdad on Saturday, a local police source said.

“The IED, attached to the vehicle of the two employees working for the Iraqi housing & reconstruction ministry, went off as the vehicle was passing in the area of al-Suleikh, northern Baghdad, leaving them wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded men were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source added.

Soldier killed in IED blast in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

An Iraqi soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in southern Mosul city on Saturday, according to a police source in Ninewa.

“The soldier, who was on a leave of absence from duty, was killed when the IED went off just as he was getting into his car parked in front of his house in Wadi Hajar, southern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-stricken province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Cop killed, officer injured in clashes with gunmen in Gayiara

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman was killed on Saturday and one lieutenant colonel wounded in clashes with gunmen in the al-Gayiara, after the attempt to assassinate the district’s police commander by unknown gunmen.

“Clashes erupted when a security force launched a raid operation in a village of the al-Gayiara looking for the gunmen,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He noted that the casualties occurred when the force engaged with the gunmen.

The al-Gayiara district’s police commander was seriously wounded earlier on Saturday when he came under gunmen’s fire south of Mosul city.

“The gunmen were driving a civilian car when they opened fire today targeting Col. Eid Nammuss in the al-Zawiya village of the district, 70 km south of Mosul,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency

He noted that the officer was admitted to hospital.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Cop killed, another injured, house detonated in blasts in Falluja

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman was killed on Saturday and another wounded when a roadside bomb went off targeting a police patrol in central al-Amiriya, south of Falluja city, while gunmen detonated a citizen’s house in a separate incident in the district, without causing any casualties.

“A roadside bomb hit a police patrol today in central al-Amiriya district, leaving one of the patrol’s policemen dead and another wounded,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He noted that one of the patrol’s vehicles was damaged due to the blast.

“Unknown gunmen planted and detonated explosives near a citizen’s house in central al-Amiriya,” the source added.

He explained that the blast destroyed the house totally, and caused damage to nearby houses, without any casualties.

Falluja, the biggest city of the al-Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

2 cops killed by gunmen fire in Mosul

Two policemen on duty were killed by unidentified gunmen fire in western Mosul city on Friday, according to a local security source.

“Unknown gunmen shot dead two policemen away from their checkpoint in the area of Tal al-Rimman, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The two policemen were bringing food for their fellows at the checkpoint,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-stricken province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Car bomb leaves 23 casualties in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

At least five people were killed and 18 others were wounded in a car bomb blast in western Baghdad on Friday, according to a security source.

“A car rigged with explosives went off on Friday morning (July 9) near an army checkpoint in al-Aamiriya neighborhood in western Baghdad, killing five persons, including three soldiers and two civilians, and injuring 18, including two soldiers and 16 civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast damaged a number of civilian vehicles,” he added, without giving further details.

Baghdad witnessed several explosions in the past few days, during which scores were killed or wounded, most of them are Shiite pilgrims.
