24 Iraqis Killed in 12 Attacks, 2 US Pilots Killed in Northern Iraq

Yaqen.net reported that a mother and her three daughters were killed by gunmen in Al-Hurriah area in northwest of Baghdad today.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two U.S. army chopper pilots have been killed as a result of an accident in northern Iraq, according to an official statement.

The accident occurred near a U.S. base in northern Iraq. “The aircraft made a hard landing inside the base. There were no enemy forces present and no hostile fire was reported,” according to a statement published on the official web site of the United States Forces-Iraq.

 “The accident is under investigation and release of the Soldiers’ identities are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin,” it noted. “The Task Force Marne command team mourns the loss of these two aviators and extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to their Families,” it added.

Cop killed, physician wounded in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman was killed and a physician was injured in two separate incidents in Baghdad, according to a security source.

“One policeman was killed on Monday evening (Feb. 22) by an unknown sniper in central Baghdad,” the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The policeman was killed while standing in al-Nasr square in al-Saadon street in central Baghdad,” the source explained, noting that security forces did not find the sniper despite searching the whole area.

“A bomb, stuck to a physician’s vehicle, exploded in al-Adhamiya neighborhood in northern Baghdad,” the same source said.

“The explosion wounded Dr. Jassem Mohammad, who was taken to the nearby al-Nuaaman hospital for treatment,” he added.

He did not give further details.

2 gunmen killed, wounded in Tikrit

One gunman was killed and another one was wounded in a bomb blast in central Tikrit, a police source said on Monday.

“One gunman was killed and another one was seriously wounded when an explosive charge they were planting inside a car went off in Jameel street in central Tikrit,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded was admitted to the intensive care of the city’s hospital,” the source added.

Tikrit, the capital of Salah el-Din, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

Contractor’s body found southwest of Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces on Monday found the body of an Iraqi contractor in southwest of Kirkuk, a senior police officer said.

“Policemen found on Monday morning the body of, Mohammad Khalaf Ahmad, a contractor, born in 1974, near al-Rashad district, southwest of Kirkuk,” Brig. Sarhad Qader, the director of the Kirkuk Districts’ Police Department (KDPD), told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body bore signs of gunshot wounds to the chest,” he added, noting the body was sent to the Azadi hospital’s morgue.

He gave no more details.

The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

IED wounds 2 cops in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two Iraqi policemen have been injured when an explosive device hit their patrol vehicle in Mosul City, a local security source said on Monday.

“This afternoon, an improvised explosive device (IED) hit a police patrol vehicle in al-Majmoua al-Thaqafiya area, northern Mosul, wounding two policemen, including a lieutenant,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The blast caused severe damage to the vehicle, the source pointed out. Earlier today, two security checkpoints were attacked by gunmen in Mosul City, leaving two soldiers and two cops dead.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Cop killed by gunmen in southern Kirkuk

An investigations officer has been killed by unknown gunmen in southern Kirkuk City, a local police chief said on Monday.

“This afternoon, unknown gunmen opened fire on Lt. Col. Kamran Ali Ihsan in front of his house in al-Asra Wal Mafqodeen neighborhood, southern Kirkuk, killing him on the spot,” Brig. Sarhad Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The officer, who worked in the investigations department in al-Muqdad police station, was attacked while he was heading back home, the official pointed out.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

3 killed 5 wounded in Ramadi bombing

Three policemen were killed and five civilians were wounded when a car bomb hit a police department in Ramadi, a local security source said on Monday.

“A booby-trapped car targeted the headquarters of the local police affairs department in al-Jazeera area, northern Ramadi,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The local police command has imposed a curfew on vehicles and motorbikes until further notice, the source noted.

Ramadi, the capital city of Anbar province, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

Killers of Baghdad family arrested

Members of an armed group that killed a big family in downtown Baghdad earlier today have been arrested, the Baghdad Operations Command (BOC) said on Monday.

“The terrorist group that killed eight members of one family in al-Wahda neighborhood has been captured,” the semi-official al-Iraqiya TV quoted BOC Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Qassem Ata as saying. Earlier today, the BOC said that a terrorist group had killed eight family members with silencer-equipped guns and beheaded some of them.

8 family members killed in attack on their house

Eight members of one family have been killed during an armed attack on their house in the capital Baghdad, the Baghdad Operations Command (BOC) said on Monday.

“At 07:00 a.m. Feb. 22, 2010, a terrorist group committed a terrible crime against a family in al-Wahda neighborhood,” according to a statement published on the command’s official web site. The group killed eight family members with silencer-equipped guns and beheaded some of them, the statement pointed out. Tight security measures have been put in place and a hunt for the attackers is currently underway, it added.

Two Iraqi policemen have been killed in an attack on a security checkpoint in downtown Mosul City, a local security source said on Monday.

“At noon, unknown gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in al-Jame al-Kabeer area, central Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The attack left two policemen dead, the source explained. Earlier today, unknown gunmen driving a motorbike opened fire on an Iraqi army checkpoint in Sumar neighborhood, southeastern Mosul, killing two soldiers.

Uni. professor assassinated in Baghdad

A university professor has been gunned down in eastern Baghdad, a local police source said on Monday.

“This morning, unknown gunmen killed a university professor, Thamir Kamel, with a silencer-equipped gun near al-Hodood Club, eastern Baghdad,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not give further details.

2 Iraqi soldiers killed in Mosul shooting

Two Iraqi servicemen have been gunned down at a security checkpoint in Mosul City, a local security source said on Monday.

“Today, unknown gunmen driving a motorbike opened fire on an Iraqi army checkpoint in Sumar neighborhood, southeastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The bodies have been taken to the morgue in Mosul, the source noted, adding that the attackers have managed to escape.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
