Kurdish security officer killed in central Arbil

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

A captain from Kurdish security forces was killed by gunmen in central Arbil, a police source said on Monday.

“Gunmen killed a Kurdish captain on Monday night (Nov. 9) in al-Mufti neighborhood in central Arbil,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The victim was still alive when he arrived at the hospital but he died later of wounds,” a medic said.

Civilian killed in eastern Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One civilian was killed on Monday by gunmen in central Mosul, a police source noted.

“Unknown gunmen shot and killed a greengrocer in al-Nabi Younes region in eastern Mosul on Monday (Nov. 9),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He gave no further details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Sadrist leader assassinated in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

A leader in the Sadrist Movement, led by Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, has been killed by unknown gunmen in southern Kirkuk, a local security source said on Monday.

“The police received reports that unknown gunmen had killed a man with silencer-equipped gun inside a foodstuffs store in al-Asra wal Mafqodeen neighborhood (southern Kirkuk) at 08:30 p.m. yesterday (Nov.8),” Col. Anwar Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Preliminary investigations have shown that the victim was Hadi Issa al-Thihabi, a key leader in the Sadrist Movement in Kirkuk,” the colonel noted. The source did not provide further details.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Roadside bomb devastates U.S. vehicle in Samara

A roadside bomb went off on Monday targeting a U.S. patrol near Samara city, said a source from the Iraqi police.

“The incident took place in central al-Moatasem district, 10 km south of Samara,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He said that the blast damaged a U.S. hammer vehicle. The source said that U.S. forces deployed support in the area, and closed a nearby main road for more than two hours. The U.S. side declined to comment on the attack.

2 U.S. pilots killed in hard landing

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two U.S. army pilots were killed when their helicopter experienced a hard landing in Salah al-Din, the U.S. army said on Monday.

“The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense,” according to a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The incident, which occurred yesterday, is under investigation, the statement added.

The death brings to 4,355 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, including 134 killed in 2009.

2 gunmen killed in IED blast they planted

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two gunmen were killed while attempting to emplace and improvised an explosive device in eastern Mosul city on Sunday, a local police source in Ninewa informed.

“The gunmen were killed when the IED they were about to plant went off near them on the main street in al-Zahraa neighborhood, eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give further details about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of volatile province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. AmR (P)/SR
