US-Taliban Talks in Kabul: US Recognition of Taliban Rule in Return for Ceasefire Against US Forces Al-Watan, Saudi Newspaper, November 22, 2009 The US Ambassador to Afghanistan, General Karl Eckenberry, held talks with the former Taliban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mulla Mutawakil, in Kabul. They exchanged views of their governments with the goal of ending the Afghani war. The US Ambassador offered to recognize the Taliban rule of several provinces, including Kandahar, Helmond, Arzakan, Kunar, and Nouristan. In return, the US Ambassador demanded that Taliban fighters stop their attacks on US forces and bases in the country. The next step is that Mulla Mutawakil will convey the US initiative to the leader of Taliban, Mulla Omar, through his adviser, Mulla Brader Akhond.
