JERUSALEM, May 4 (Xinhua) --

About 66 percent of Israeli Jews support a military action aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear facilities, said a survey carried by local daily Ha'aretz Monday.

According to the survey sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League, when asked about Israeli army's military action against Iran, 66 percent of the polled said they approved of it, 15 percent said they were opposed and 19 percent said they did not know.

The poll, co-sponsored by the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, revealed that a large majority of those who support a move by Israeli army said they would maintain their support even if the U.S. Obama administration opposed it.

Among those who said they favored an army action, 15 percent said they would change their minds if the United States opposed it, while 75 percent said they would not. The rest said they did not know or gave other answers.

The United States and Israel have accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, but Iran has repeatedly denied the allegations, insisting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Turning to Israeli-U.S. relations, an overwhelming majority of the surveyed Israeli Jews said they believed close relations with the United States were essential for ensuring Israel's security.

Focusing on bilateral relations in the Obama era, the survey revealed concern over possible erosion of U.S. support for Israel, and over a rapprochement between the United States and Arab countries at the expense of Israel.

Israeli Jews accounts for 80 percent of Israel's population.

The survey, administered by the Maagar Mochot research institute, involved 610 respondents, constituting a representative sample of Israeli Jews over the age of 18 with a margin error of 4.5 percent.
