US Soldier, 36 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 33 Killed, 46 Injured in Abu Gharib Suicide Bombing

The Yaqen.net (the main source of news about the Iraq war in Arabic) has been hacked and its front page is quickly replaced by a website with a url having the word, Iran , which shows the Iranian flag with the words, the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Persian. The hacked front page was replaced by another showing a Yaqen.net page congratulating Muslims of the Prophet's (pbbuh) birthday and promising return in 24 hours.

Amsi.org reported the following news:

- The death toll from today's Abu Gharib suicide bombing increased to 33 and the injuries reached 46.

Katyusha rocket kills Pakistani civilian in Basra airport

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A Pakistani civilian citizen was killed late on Monday (Mar. 9) night when a Katyusha rocket hit Basra International Airport, said the spokesperson of Multi National Forces (MNF) in southern Iraq.

“A Katyusha rocket hit a civilian building at Basra International Airport (25 km northwest of the city) late yesterday night,” the spokesperson told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A civilian Pakistani who works for a company was killed in the attack,” she added.

The oil-rich city of Basra lies 590 km south of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill woman in western Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A woman was killed on Tuesday by unknown gunmen in western Mosul, a police source said. “Unidentified armed men attacked a house in al-Thawra neighborhood in western Mosul and killed a woman inside it,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The victim was an employee at the computer science faculty in the Mosul university,” the source added. He gave no more details. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

Photographer killed, 4 journalists wounded in Abu Ghraib blast

A photographer was killed, four journalists were wounded and a correspondent went missing in the suicide bombing that ripped through Baghdad’s Abu Gharib area earlier today, the Journalistic Freedoms Observatory (JFO) said on Tuesday.

“A photographer for al-Baghdadiya TV channel, Haydar Hashem Suheil, was killed; while his colleague, Suhayb Adnan, a correspondent, was reported missing,” according to a statement released by the observatory and received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Ibrahim al-Katib, a correspondent for al-Iraqiya TV channel, has been hospitalized and is in critical condition. He had brain surgery in al-Yarmuk Hospital. Al-Iraqiya channel staff were wounded, including Raed Qasim, a photographer, who was wounded in the head; his assistant, Ady Munthir, who was wounded in the hand; and Fawzi Aidan, a technical assistant, who was also wounded in the hand,” the statement noted.

An al-Iraqiya TV photographer who survived the blast, Raed Qasim, told the observatory that a number of local and international correspondents and photographers were on the scene to cover a tribal meeting there.
Qasim said that an exchange of gunfire took place between army personnel and men hidden inside nearby houses following the blast.

Earlier today, a spokesperson for Baghdad’s Operations Command (BOC), Maj. Gen. Qassem Ata, said that the suicide bombing has left 28 persons dead and 28 others wounded.

This afternnon, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a popular market in Abu Gharib area, western Baghdad, targeting a meeting held by chieftains and security personnel.

BOC: 56 killed, wounded in Abu Ghraib blast

The suicide bombing that occurred earlier today in Baghdad’s Abu Gharib area has left 56 persons dead or wounded, according to an official source.

“Twenty-eight persons were killed and 28 others were wounded in the suicide blast that occurred this afternoon in Abu Ghraib area,” a spokesperson for Baghdad’s Operations Command (BOC), Maj. Gen. Qassem Ata, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier today, a police source said that an officer and a correspondent for al-Baghdadiya TV channel were among the dead. A suicide bomber blew himself up in a popular market in Abu Ghraib area, western Baghdad, targeting a meeting held by chieftains and security personnel.

Ninewa blast casualties reach 8

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from the car bomb blast that targeted a police patrol vehicle in Ninewa province earlier today have reached eight, according to a local police source.

“Today, a bomber detonated a car rigged with explosives near a police patrol vehicle, killing two civilians, including the son of Hamdaniya’s municipal council head, and wounding six others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Earlier today, the same source said that the explosion killed two civilians and wounded two others. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. Marine dies of non-combat related incident

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. Marine on Tuesday died as a result of non-combat related incident in Anbar province, the U.S. army said.

“A Multi National Force – West Marine died as the result of a non-combat related incident in Anbar province,” read a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The Marine’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin and release by the Department of Defense,” the statement added.

The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,257.
