Iranian official accuses Israel of trying to assassinate Iranian President Ahmadinejad

Saturday July 18, 2009 18:10 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News

The Iranian Intelligence Minister told state media on Friday that he had evidence of an Israeli plot to assassinate the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, during last month’s election campaign.

Intelligence Minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie said, “The Zionist regime had met with the [exiled resistance group] People's Mujahedeen of Iran on the sidelines of [a meeting in] Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt and in Paris to assassinate Mr. Ahmadinejad.

”The announcement came after a controversial election in Iran, in which Ahmedinejad was accused of fraud, and opposition protests were violently repressed by the Iranian government.

Although the Israeli government made no response to the Iranian minister’s claim, Israeli Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon had stated in an interview with an Australian newspaper, “We have to confront the Iranian revolution immediately. There is no way to stabilize the Middle East today without defeating the Iranian regime.”

In response to a question on whether Israel would support a military overthrow of President Ahmedinejad, Ya’alon stated, “We have to consider killing him. All options must be considered.”
