Palestinian FM slams Czech statement calling Israeli invasion "defensive"

Date: 04 / 01 / 2009  Time:  13:25
Ramallah – Ma’an –

An official spokesperson of the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs slammed the Czech Republic, whose representative currently heads the European Parliament, for saying that Israeli war against Gaza was of a “defensive nature.”

The Palestinian foreign ministry said it considered such declaration as giving legal justification to the Israeli aggression and encouraging Israel to continue killing more Palestinians in Gaza. The Czech statement contradicts European efforts obtain a ceasefire in Gaza.

According to the foreign ministry, such a declaration is extremely negative, especially since it comes hours in advance of the arrival of the European delegation to the region, which is accompanied with French President Nikolas Sarkozy.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said it hoped that Czech statements do not reflect the strategy of the coming delegation.
