US Soldier, 12 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Scores of Injuries, January 29, 2009 Yaqen.net reported the following news: - Three Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers were killed in Mindaly, while sticking election posters on walls. - An election Tawafuq Front candidate was assassinated in Al-Amiriya. - An Iraqi political prisoner in the US Boca detention camp in Basra died as a result of torture. - Al-Tabi'in Brigades announced attacking the US air base of Al-Bakr in Balad using a C5K rocket. - Former Iraqi army fighters damaged a US vehicle in Dhera'a Dajla street, destroying two trucks in Al-Ghazaliya, destroyed a mine sweeper in Al-Falloujah, destroyed a vehicle near Al-Ahbar factory, attacked the US forces base in Al-Adl neighborhood destroying a vehicle, destroyed a Hummer vehicle in Al-Bakriya, in Baghdad. In all these attacks, there were US casualties. - A government official was killed by a roadside bomb in Basra. - A US military vehicle was destroyed in Al-hussainiya, northeast of Baghdad. - Iraq army soldiers clashed with the Iraqi policemen in Al-Rutba. - A US Soldier was killed, two others were injured by a roadside bomb in Hammam Al-Aleel, northeast of Mosul. - Mayada Al-Bayati, an activist in the Iraqi Islamic Party (part of the government) was assassinated inside her home. ================================== 14 people killed, injured in violent acts in Iraq January 29, 2009 - 10:59:35 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Five persons were killed and nine others were wounded in acts of violence that took place in Iraq in the past 24 hours, security sources said. In Mosul, a police source said an improvised explosive device (IED) placed inside a dressmaker’s store went off in Halab street in central Mosul on Wednesday (Jan. 28), injuring three civilians. A police source said an improvised explosive device went off on Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 28) targeting a police vehicle patrol in Mosul al-Jadieda region in western Mosul, killing a policeman. In Diala, a security source said an explosive charge detonated on a main road linking Hamreen Lake to al-Saadiya district (155 km northeast of Baaquba city), killing two army personnel and wounding six others. In Kirkuk, unknown gunmen opened fire on an electoral center in Touz Khormato in south of Kirkuk on Wednesday, killing two policemen, including an officer. SH (P)/SR Candidate assassinated in Mosul January 29, 2009 - 06:56:54 NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A candidate running in the local elections was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in western Mosul on Thursday, according to an official police source in Ninewa province. “Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Thursday evening at Hazem Sallam Ahmed, a candidate in the provincial council elections, near his home in al-Amil district, western Mosul, killing him instantly and escaping to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The killed candidate belonged to the Iraqi Unity List led by Ahmed al-Nada, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for tribal affairs, the source added, not giving further details. AmR (P) IED kills, wounds 8 soldiers in Diala January 28, 2009 - 06:46:04 DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Eight Iraqi soldiers on Wednesday were killed or wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near Baaquba city, according to a security source. “This evening, an explosive charge detonated on a main road linking Hamreen Lake to al-Saadiya district (155 km northeast of Ba'aqouba city), killing two army personnel and wounding six others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further details. Ba'aqouba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of the capital Baghdad. A military source said a force from the 3rd brigade of the Iraqi army on Tuesday (Jan. 27) arrested four al-Qaeda’s Islamic state in Iraq gunmen. In Kirkuk, a police source said an unidentified gunman shot and killed a civilian inside his store in al-Shourga neighborhood in northern Kirkuk. Meanwhile, a police source said that another civilian was injured when a bomb exploded targeting an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in Touz Khormato, south of Kirkuk. In Babel, joint police and army forces on Tuesday arrested two suspected gunmen during a crackdown operation in the north of Hilla city, said a police source. In Wassit, a force from the Quick Response Department arrested two suspected gunmen on Tuesday (Jan. 27) on the Kut-Missan road. SH (S) Gunman kills civilian in Kirkuk January 28, 2009 - 09:45:12 KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian was killed on Wednesday by an unknown gunman in northern Kirkuk, a senior police officer said. “An unidentified gunman shot and killed a civilian inside his store in al-Shourga neighborhood in northern Kirkuk,” Colonel Bisto Mohamed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Meanwhile, a police source said that another civilian was injured when a bomb exploded targeting an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in Touz Khormato, south of Kirkuk. Kirkuk is 250 km north of Baghdad.
