US Soldier, 18 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- A US patrol was attacked with a grenade in Al-Huwaijah, west of Kirkuk, then a clash followed between US forces and the attackers.

- Three Peshmerga fighters were killed in Mendali.

- Four Iraqi policemen were killed in Mosul. They were kidnapped yesterday and their corpses were found today.

- Two US-recruited Sahwa fighters were killed in Al-Mssayeb, north of Al-Hillah.

- A US patrol was attacked in Al-Kut.

- A policeman was killed in an attack, in Al-Dora.

- US military camp called Echo, in Al-Diwaniya, was attacked with several katyousha rockets.

- 2 policemen were killed, 12 were injured in an attack on a police checkpoint in Al-Karma, east of Al-Falloujah.

- A US Hummer was destroyed in an attack on a US forces patrol north of Wassit, south of Baghdad, resulting in casualties.

-  A police officer was killed in a roadside bomb east of Al-Falloujah.

- One US-recruited Sahwa fighter was killed in an attack in Al-Latifiya.

Iraqi army secures U.S. convoys in Nassiriya

THI QAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

For the first time, an Iraqi army force protected U.S. convoys in Nassiriya, the official spokesperson for the U.S. forces in the province said on Sunday.

“This is the first time for this to happen,” the spokesperson said in the release that was received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“It reflects the coalition troops’ high level of trust in the Iraqi security forces,” he added.

“Our patrols are following the Iraqi army leading this mission,” he noted.

U.S. soldier dies of non-combat incident

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier was killed in a non-combat incident on Saturday, the 11th U.S. death in Iraq this year, according to the U.S. army on Sunday.

“A soldier from the 3rd Division died on non-combat incident on Saturday (Jan. 24),” the U.S. military said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The U.S. army had announced on Saturday (Jan. 24) the death of a soldier in a combat incident in southern Iraq.

Seven of out of the 11 U.S. fatalities this month have died of non-combat incidents.

The announced death brings to 4,232 the number of U.S. soldiers killed since the beginning of military operations in March 2003.

Unknown corpse found southeast of Arbil

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces on Sunday seized an unknown corpse in al-Kower town, southeast of Arbil, said a source from the province’s police.

“The corpse of a man in his twenties was discovered,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“It was found to the west of al-Kower district, after people from the area alerted authorities through phone calls,” he said.

“The body bore signs of gunshots,” he noted.

Arbil city lies 362 km northeast of Baghdad.

Mosul blast leaves civilian killed, 2 wounded

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A civilian man was killed and two others wounded in a blast from an improvised explosive device in the city of Mosul on Saturday, a police source in Ninewa said.

“An IED went off near a police patrol in Bab al-Jadeed area, central Mosul, killing a civilian and wounding two others, including a policeman,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source did not reveal more information about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

US Forces kill 2, wound 1 near Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two people were killed and a third wounded when US forces (officially known as Multi-National Force or MNF) personnel opened fire on a house in the district of al-Huweija, southwest of Kirkuk, on Saturday, a source from the province’s police operations room said.

“The MNF troops opened fire at a house in the village of al-Ilyawa, Huweija, (65 km) northwest of Kirkuk, killing Diaa Hussein Ali, a colonel of the dissolved former Iraqi army, and his wife Fataheya, and wounding his daughter Ahlam,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source neither indicated the motives behind the incident, nor gave furtherdetails about it.

Aswat al-Iraq news agency failed to reach al-Miqdad Gabriel, the MNF media advisor, for comments.

The city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

U.S. vehicle devastated north of Kut

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

A roadside bomb went off on Saturday targeting a U.S. convoy in northern Wassit, devastating one of the convoy’s vehicles, said a source from the province’s police.

“A roadside bomb, which was planted by unknown individuals on the highway connecting Kut to Baghdad near al-Hafriya district (105 km north of Kut city), detonated targeting a U.S. convoy,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“One U.S. military Hummer vehicle was devastated in the attack,” he added.

Kut, the capital city of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

2 policemen killed in car bomb attack in Falluja

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two policemen were killed and nine others wounded on Saturday when a car rigged with explosives driven by a suicide bomber went off in eastern Falluja, a police source in the city said.

“The bomber detonated his explosive vehicle near the Osoud al-Jazira police station, al-Karam district, eastern Falluja, killing two policemen and wounding nine others,” Lt. Colonel Hameed al-Dulaimi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

“One of the two dead policemen was an officer while the wounded were five policemen and four civilians,” Dulaimi added.

Anbar’s capital is Ramadi, 110 km west of Baghdad.
