2 US Soldiers, 26 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks According to January 22, 2009 News Reports Yaqen.net reported the following news: - A US convoy was attacked by a roadside bomb in Abu Gharib, west of Baghdad, which damaged a Hummer. - Another US forces convoy was attacked southeast of Baghdad, damaging a Humvee. - An Iraqi army officer and two soldiers were killed in an attack in Jalawla, in Diala Province. - US planes dropped torches on a farm in Al-Naba'i area, north of Baghdad, which led to the total burning of the farm. - Four joint US-Iraqi forces soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Wadi Hijr, Mosul. - An Iraqi army officer was killed, two soldiers were injured by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad. - An Iraqi soldier was killed, another was injured in a clash with US forces at a checkpoint in Al-Za'afaraniya. - Five Iraqi policemen were killed by a roadside bomb in Al-Dor, Salahuddin Province. - 2 US soldiers were killed, four were injured by a roadside bomb in Al-Shurqat, near Mosul. =================================== Civilian killed in Baghdad January 22, 2009 - 07:11:25 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian man was killed by unidentified gunmen fire in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of al-Shaab on Thursday, police said. “Unidentified gunmen in a civilian vehicle opened fire at a civilian man in al-Shaab neighborhood, northern Baghdad, killing him instantly,” an Iraqi police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen escaped to an unknown place,” the source added. AmR (P) No security vacuum after U.S. forces withdraw – BOC January 22, 2009 - 02:54:13 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: There will be no security vacuum when the U.S. forces have withdrawn from cities by virtue of the Iraqi-U.S. security pact, a senior security official affirmed on Thursday. “The Baghdad Operations Command will not leave any gap or security vacuum when the U.S. forces have withdrawn from Iraqi cities by the end of next June,” Maj. General Qassim Atta, the BOC chief, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “U.S. forces’ pullout from the Green Zone, central Baghdad, will be over three stages,” he added. The heavily-fortified U.S. protected green zone hosts the Iraqi government, the U.S. and British embassies, in addition to a number of Arab and western diplomatic missions in Iraq. MH (P)/AmR 4 family members killed in Wassit January 22, 2009 - 02:43:56 WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq: Four persons of the same family were killed by unidentified gunmen fire in northern Wassit, a security source in the province said on Thursday. “Unidentified gunmen opened fire today (Jan. 22) at a family of four in al-Zohour neighborhood, al-Suwayra district, (135 km) north of al-Kut city, killing them all instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “No motives could be detected for the killing of a father, his wife, daughter and son,” the source added. He said that the culprits escaped before the police arrived at the scene and cordon off the family’s house. “The bodies of victims were removed to a morgue in Kut,” he said. Kut, the capital city of Wassit, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad. AmR (P) U.S. forces kill 3 brothers in Mosul January 22, 2009 - 12:15:20 NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: U.S. forces on Thursday killed three brothers inside their house, in a raid operation in southern Mosul city, said a source from Ninewa province’s police. “U.S. forces on today at dawn raided a house in Albosaif village, southern Mosul, and killed three brothers inside the house,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He did not mention further details. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. MH (P)/SR Iraqi-U.S. forces launch joint operation south of Baghdad January 22, 2009 - 08:47:54 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces on Thursday waged a security operation in south of Baghdad, eyewitnesses said. “The forces waged the operation in Abu Dashier region, south of Baghdad, searching for weapons,” eyewitnesses told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. They did not add more details. SH (P)/SR Civilian killed, 2 wounded in car bomb blast in Baghdad January 22, 2009 - 08:03:42 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian was killed and two others were wounded on Thursday in a car bomb explosion in southeastern Baghdad. “A car rigged with explosives exploded targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol on the highway between al-Qanat region and al-Mashtal in southeastern Baghdad, killing a civilian and injuring two,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The explosion damaged a U.S. military vehicle,” he added. No word was immediately available from the U.S. army on the incident. SH (P)/SR Landmine kills woman near Basra January 21, 2009 - 05:53:21 BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq: A woman on Wednesday was killed by a landmine in Jubeida area in the west of Basra province, according to the media office of the local police.”A landmine from previous wars detonated near a woman who was herding sheep in Jubeida area (40 km west of Basra), killing her on the spot,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. According to figures released by the Disabled People’s International (DPI) in 2006, at least 55 million cluster bombs have been dropped in Iraq during its two latest wars. The Shiite province of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SS (P)/SR IED wounds child, body found in Samarra January 21, 2009 - 04:24:29 SALAH AL-DIN: A child was severely wounded by an explosive charge that targeted a U.S. patrol vehicle in Samarra, a security source said, adding that a beheaded body was found in a separate incident. “This afternoon, an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a U.S. patrol vehicle in downtown al-Dour district, seriously wounding a child, Omar Hizaa,” a source from the joint coordination center in Tikrit city told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Meanwhile, police personnel found a beheaded body belonging to a civilian with an identification card indicating that he is a local resident,” according to the same source. Samarra lies 120 km north of the Iraqi capital; while Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of it. SS (P)/SR Adhamiya explosion caused by adhesive bomb – BOC
Baghdad’s Operations Command (BOC) said the explosion that targeted the dean of the Islamic University on Wednesday in al-Adhamiya neighborhood, northern Baghdad, was caused by an adhesive bomb that was adhered to one of the dean’s motorcade’s cars. “The car that was bombed was the second in Dean Ziyad al-Ani’a motorcade,” General Qassim Atta told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The car’s driver and a civilian woman,
who was nearby the incident’s location, were killed in the detonation,”
