Richard Falk calls for economic sanctions against Israel to lift the Gaza siege [ 24/12/2009 - 09:47 AM ] NEW YORK, (PIC)-- Richard Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on "the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967," has called for the swift implementation of the recommendations included in Goldstone's report. Falk in a statement on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Israeli war on Gaza, said that Israel's allies in Europe and Northern America should insist on ending the "illegal siege on the Gaza Strip". He advocated threatening economic sanctions on Israel in the event it did not lift the siege. The tragedy of 1.5 million human beings in Gaza was ongoing without any official international protest, Falk said, describing such a situation as a "tragic failure" on the part of strong governments of the world and the UN in shouldering their responsibilities.
