Livni Cancelled UK Visit Over Arrest Fears on War Crime Charges

Published today (updated) 14/12/2009 14:58

Bethlehem - Ma'an -

Former Israeli occupation government Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni, cancelled a visit to Britain over the weekend fearing arrest, the London-based Jewish Chronicle was reporting Sunday, in reference to charges against her of responsibility for the Israeli war crimes in Gaza in January 2009.

Livni was scheduled to speak at the Jewish National Fund's 2010 conference in London, where she planned to meet UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown for private talks, the report said.

According to the report, the Israeli opposition leader pulled out over fears lawyers would obtain an arrest warrant for her involvement in last winter's military assault on the Gaza Strip, which killed 1,400 Palestinians in just over three weeks.

Livni's office denied the arrest reports, but confirmed that she cancelled the visit. "We declined the invitation to the annual JNF conference two weeks ago. Livni is proud of all the decisions she made regarding Operation Cast Lead," her office said in a statement, according to the Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth.
