Mosul mosque blast casualties up to 85

Casualties from Friday’s earlier car bomb blast near a Shi'i mosque in Mosul rose to 15 deaths and 70 wounded, a Ninewa police source said.

A security source had said that eight civilians were killed and 45 others wounded when a car bomb went off near a Shiite mosque in northern Mosul city.

“A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vehicle in front of a Shi'i mosque in al-Shrifan neighborhood, al-Rashidiya area, northern Mosul, as worshippers were stepping out after the Friday congregational prayer,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The casualties are most likely to rise due to the powerfulness of the explosion that caused severe damage to the surrounding area,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Unknown body found in Mosul

Policemen found an unidentified body with signs of having been shot in northern Mosul city, a police source in Ninewa said on Friday.

“Police forces found the body in the area of al-Majmouaa al-Thaqafiya area, northern Mosul, on Thursday night, showing signs of having been shot in the head and chest,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The corpse was removed to a morgue in the city,” he added, not giving further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 IEDs leave 30 Shiite pilgrims killed, wounded

Six people were killed and 24 others wounded when three roadside improvised explosive devices planted in different areas of eastern Baghdad went off near Shiite pilgrims returning from Karbala on Friday, an Iraqi police source said.

“An IED went off near a bus boarding pilgrims from Karbala at al-Hamza square in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, leaving three killed and eight others wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A second roadside charge planted near al-Sha'ab playground targeted another bus coming from Karbala, leaving two killed and 11 others wounded,” he said.

“The third IED, which went of in the area of al-Habibiya, left one man killed and five others wounded,” the source added.

Kirkuk car bomb casualties rise to 37

Casualties from Thursday evening’s earlier car bomb blast in an outdoor souk (market) in Kirkuk rose to five deaths and 32 wounded, according to the Kirkuk Districts’ Police Department (KDPD) chief.

“The number of casualties is more likely to rise,” Brig. Sarhad Qader told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion caused material damage to nearby buildings and stores,” he added.

Earlier, a local medical source said five bodies and 20 wounded persons arrived at a hospital in Kirkuk after a car bomb ripped through a souk in Rahimawa area, northern Kirkuk.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich city of mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Gunmen shoot down woman in Mosul

A woman was killed by gunmen in western Mosul city on Thursday, a police source in Ninewa said.

“Gunmen opened fire at a woman on the main street in the neighborhood of al-Islah al-Ziraie, western Mosul, and escaped to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Two gunmen were killed and a third wounded when a roadside bomb they were carrying inside their vehicle went off in eastern Mosul city on Thursday, a police source in Ninewa said.

“The incident took place at al-Faysaliya neighborhood, eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen were delivering the roadside bomb to plant it in another place,” he said.

“The injured gunman is remanded under investigative custody,” the source added.

2 killed in attack south of Khanaqin

A man and his wife were killed when unidentified gunmen showered their vehicle with bullets south of Khanaqin district on Thursday, a local security source in Diala said.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a civilian vehicle on Thursday (Aug. 6) on the main road linking Imam Weis area to al-Saadiya district, (35 km) south of Khanaqin, instantly killing a man and his wife inside,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Khanaqin, a city disputed between the central government in Baghdad and the sem-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, lies 155 km northeast of Baaquba.

“The gunmen then escaped to an unknown place,” the source added, not giving further details.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Two gunmen were killed and a third one was injured when the bomb they were carrying went off in eastern Mosul, a police source said Thursday.

“The gunmen were carrying the bomb to plant it on a road when it exploded in their car in al-Faisaliya region in eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The police carried the two bodies and arrested the wounded for investigation,” he noted.

Gunmen kill 2 civilians in Diala

A man and his wife were killed Thursday when unknown gunmen opened fire on their car south of Khanaqin, according to a security source.

“Unidentified gunmen on Thursday (Aug. 6) opened fire on a civilian vehicle on the road between Imam Wes and al-Saadiya district, south of Khanaqin, killing a man and his wife,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The armed men fled to unknown place,” he added.

Khanaqin is 155 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
