    WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) --

Tens of thousands of people have paid tribute to late U.S. senator Edward Kennedy at John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, Mass., since the public viewing of his casket began there Thursday.

Boston police told reporters that they estimated that 50,000 mourners have walked past his flag-drapped casket during the public viewing, which ended Friday afternoon.

Mourners at the public viewing were greeted by members of the Kennedy family, including 81-year-old Jean Kennedy Smith, the senator's sister and the last surviving Kennedy sibling.

Kennedy lay in repose Thursday evening after his casket arrived at the library from the Kennedy family's Hyannis Port compound on Cape Cod, Mass.

He died Tuesday night in Hyannis Port after a 15-month battle with brain cancer.

Kennedy, 77, had represented Massachusetts in the Senate since 1962.

A private memorial service is scheduled in the evening at the library, with Vice President Joe Biden, Senators John Kerry and John McCain among the speakers.

At least 40 of Kennedy's fellow senators and former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are expected to attend Saturday's funeral at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Boston's Mission Hill section, a short distance from the library.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who called Kennedy an "extraordinary leader", will deliver a eulogy at the funeral.

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown are also expected to attend.

Kennedy will be buried Saturday evening at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington DC.

The long-serving senator was the last of the four famous Kennedy brothers: John the assassinated president, Robert the assassinated senator and presidential candidate, Joseph the aviator killed in action in World War II and himself.

He was first elected to the Senate in 1962, when his brother John was president.

In 1980, Kennedy ran for president but lose to Jimmy Carter in the Democratic nomination race.

During his 47 years in the Senate, he left behind a rich legislative legacy, including health insurance for children of the working poor, the landmark 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, the No Child Left Behind Education law and a Medicare drug benefit for the elderly.

Recently, he was a chief advocate for Obama's health care reform plan.
