U.S. soldier killed in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. serviceman has died as a result of a combat-related incident in Baghdad, the U.S. army said on Sunday.
“A Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldier died Aug. 23, from combat-related injuries while conducting a patrol in Baghdad. The Soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” read a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The incident is currently under investigation,” the statement noted.
Five U.S. soldiers were killed in August 2009.

The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,334.

15 killed, 21 injured in two explosions in Wassit

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq: At least 15 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 21 others were wounded Monday in two explosions inside two buses in north of Kut, a security source said.

“The first bus exploded near al-Dabouni district, north of Kut, killing nine and injuring 11, while the second bus went off near al-Nuaamaniya district, north of Kut, killing six and injuring 10,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Preliminary investigations proved that the bombs were planted inside the buses, which were carrying passengers from Baghdad to Kut,” he added.

“The wounded were rushed to al-Nuaamaniya hospital for treatment,” he said, without giving further details.

Kut, the capital of Wassit, is 180 km southwest of Baghdad.
