2 US Soldiers, 9 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Thousands Protest US Occupation in Al-Firdous Square

Arab TV stations aired footage of thousands of Iraq demonstrators protesting the US occupation of their country, in  Al-Firdous Square. The same square was the scene of the regime change US invasion of Iraq caused in 2003. Then, US soldiers placed a US flag on the face of a statue of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain, then toppled the statue down, on April 9, 2003. Iraqis have been demonstrating in protest to the US invasion every year in the same anniversary.


Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- A US Hummer military vehicle was destroyed by a roadside bomb in Al-Rayhaniya, near Anna, Al-Anbar Province.

- Ansar Al-Sunnah fighters announced that they killed two US soldiers by sniping on the north Baghdad juncture (US forces have not confirmed this news yet).

- Deputy of Al-Falloujah Sahwa leader survived an assassination attempt on his life.

- Two policemen were killed, three were injured in two attacks in Mosul.

Roadside bomb targets police patrol in Amara

MISSAN / Aswat al-Iraq:

A roadside bomb on Thursday went off targeting a police patrol in northern Amara city, without causing any casualties, said a source from Missan province’s police.

“The incident took place in al-Moalimeen neighborhood, northern Amara,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion caused no casualties, but damaged the patrol’s vehicle,” he said.

“The attack is the second of this type to occur during April 2009,” he added.

Amara, the capital city of Missan province, lies 390 km south of Baghdad.

Gunman wounded in explosion in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

One gunman was wounded while he was attempting to plant a grenade to target a Sahwa (Awakening) checkpoint, to the southwest of Kirkuk, said a source from the province’s police.

“The incident took place in al-Riyadh district, 45 km southwest of Kirkuk,” Brigadier Serhad Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded gunman was immediately arrested by Sahwa fighters,” he said.

“The gunman was admitted to hospital, and interrogations are currently underway,” he added.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km north of Baghdad.

Roadside bomb targets MNF in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A roadside bomb went off targeting a Multi-National Forces (MNF) patrol in Iraq’s northern city of Basra, without causing any damages or casualties, a source from Basra Operations Room said on Thursday.

“The incident took place while the patrol was en-route to its base at Basra International Airport,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The charge was planted in a pit covered with garbage,” he said.

“The attack caused no casualties or damages,” he added.

The source did not explain whether the patrol was British or U.S.

The MNF in Basra have note yet commented on this issue.

The oil-rich city of Basra lies 590 km south of Baghdad.

2 gunmen kill civilian in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A civilian was killed by two gunmen in western Mosul on Thursday, a police source said.

“Two unknown gunmen shot and killed a civilian in al-Senaa al-Qadeema region in western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He added no additional details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Bomb explodes near U.S. patrol in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

An improvised explosive device went off on Thursday in central Kirkuk, targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol, a police source said.

“The bomb exploded while a U.S. vehicle patrol was passing near the Kirkuk council building,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion caused no casualties or material damage,” he added, without giving further details.

Kirkuk is 250 km north of Baghdad.

Badoush jail mortared west of Mosul

Four mortar shells hit Badoush prison in the west of Mosul, a police source said on Thursday.

“The shells, launched on Wednesday night (April 8), exploded near the external fence of the jail,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He added no further details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 civilians found dead in Diala

Police forces on Thursday found two bodies of a woman and her daughter in the northeast of Baaquba, a security source said.

“Police forces on Thursday morning (April 9) found the bodies of a woman and her daughter near Rabieya village in al-Saadiya district, south of Khaneqeen, northeast of Baaquba,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that they had been kidnapped on Wednesday (April 8) in Jalawlaa district, west of Khaneqeen.

Khaneqeen is 155 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

4 civilians killed, wounded in Diala blast

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: One civilian on Thursday was killed and three others were wounded in an explosive charge blast that occured in downtown Baaquba city, according to a local police source.

“A sticky improvised explosive device (IED) went off inside a civilian vehicle in al-Ameen neighborhood, downtown Baaquba, killing one civilian and wounding three others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further details.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

4 cops detained in Wassit

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four policemen, including one of the Wassit governor’s bodyguards, were arrested for opening fire in front of the Wassit council’s building in central Kut, according to a security source.

“Iraqi security forces on Thursday (April 9) arrested four policemen, including a bodyguard of the Wassit’s governor, as the governor bodyguards started a random shooting without a reason,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The chief of police, Gneral Raed Shaker, ordered to arrest the policemen who were in the region for not arresting the shooters,” he added.

Kut, the capital of Wassit, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

20 persons detained in Basra

Police forces on Thursday arrested 20 suspects and wanted men in separate areas of Basra, the media office of the Basra police said.

“Policemen launched security raids in separate areas of Basra, where 17 wanted men and three suspected gunmen were arrested,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“”The forces defused an explosive charge of five kg of TNT which had been hidden behind Ibn Maged hospital in al-Kharbatliya region in central Basra,” he added.

Basra lies 590 km south of Baghdad.

11 wanted men arrested, arms seized in Amara

Security forces arrested 11 wanted men and seized arms and munitions in central al-Amara city on Thursday, according to a security source in Missan province.

“The province’s policemen also seized an anti-personnel rocket and a hand-grenade in the raid that occurred in the area of Abu Rimaneh, central Amara,” Col. Sadeq Sallam, the Missan police department’s relations & information chief, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The raid was conducted based on intelligence tip-offs and commensurate with the law,” Sallam added, not giving more information.

Amara, the capital city of Missan province, lies 390 km south of Baghdad.

65 wanted persons, suspects arrested, arms seized in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Policemen arrested 65 wanted persons and suspects and seized arms, munitions and unlicensed vehicles and motorbikes during a large scale raid in different areas of Basra on Thursday, a local security source said.

“In search raids in several areas of Basra, 20 men wanted on terrorist and criminal charges and 45 suspects were arrested,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The raiding force also seized two Kalashnikov assault rifles, one RPK rifle with their ammunition and 16 munitions caches, in addition to a hand-grenade and 23 unlicensed vehicles and 13 unlicensed motorbikes,” the source added.

Earlier on Thursday (April 9), a source from the Basra police department’s information & relations office told Aswat al-Iraq that 20 wanted persons and suspects were arrested and unlicensed vehicles and motorbikes were seized in a wide-scale crackdown in different areas of the province, adding an improvised explosive device was defused in central Basra.

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

7 AQI gunmen captured in Samarra

SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq:

Security forces arrested seven gunmen believed to be members of the Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) network in an operation conducted west of the city of Samarra on Thursday, according a source from the Samarra Operations Command.

“An SOC force captured the seven gunmen in the area of al-Jallam, west of Samarra, where several arms and munitions were also seized,” Col. Ismail Khalaf Jassem told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Samarra, a city in Salah al-Din province, lies 120 km north of Baghdad.

“The operation was carried out based on intelligence tip-offs received by the SOC on the gunmen’s whereabouts,” added Jassem, not giving further details.

Salah al-Din lies 175 km north of the Iraqi capital.
