14 Iraqis Killed, 27 Injured, 12 Arrested, Two Attacks on US Forces, April 5, 2009




Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- A US patrol was attacked with a roadside bomb in Al-Sha'ab area, northeast of Baghdad.

- 2 Iraqi soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb targeting their patrol in Yathreb, north of Baghdad.

- 2 Iraqi soldiers were killed by US soldiers at a checkpoint in Al-Shu'ala area, west of Baghdad.

- US military base in Al-Ghazlani, in Mosul, was attacked with four mortar rounds.

- Yasser Khudhair, a medical doctor, was killed by gunmen in Al-'Adhamiya, north of Baghdad.

Amsi.org reported that Commander of 18th US Brigade, General Lloyd Austin, announced that US forces face about 700 attacks every week during 2008.

3 civilians, cop, soldier wounded in separate incidents

Five persons, including a policeman and a soldier, were wounded in separate incidents in Mosul city, a security source said on Sunday.

“Gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in al-Midan area, downtown Mosul, wounding three persons, including a policeman and a woman,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Meanwhile, a civilian was injured when gunmen shot him in front of his house in Tal al-Romman area, southwestern Mosul,” according to the same source. “An Iraqi soldier was wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted his vehicle in Dorat al-Yarmouk area, western Mosul,” according to another source.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Senior Interior Ministry official shot down in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A senior officer in the Iraqi Ministry of Interior on Sunday was killed by unidentified gunmen in the capital Baghdad.

“This evening, unknown gunmen opened fire on Brig. Ahmed Kadhem while he was inside his car with his family on al-Sinaa St, eastern Baghdad,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Kadhem was seriously wounded and died on his way to the hospital,” the source added.

2 civilians gunned down in Diala

Two civilians on Sunday were shot down by unknown gunmen in Jalawlaa district, according to a local police source.

“On Sunday evening, a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on two civilians in Baneera village (30 km southwest of Khanaqin), killing them on the spot,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further details of the incident.

Khanaqin is 155 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

IED wounds cops, Sahwa fighter near Kirkuk

Two policemen and a Sahwa council fighter on Sunday were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near Kirkuk city, according to a police source.

“On Sunday evening, an explosive charge went off in al-Thawra neighborhood (65 km southwest of Kirkuk city), wounding two cops and a Sahwa fighter,” a source from the Joint Coordination Center in Kirkuk told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The Sahwa councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force (MNF) and the Iraqi government. Headed by local chieftains, the councils have been credited with helping reduce violence in many Iraqi provinces, like Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din. Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Peshmerga fighter killed in Kirkuk

A Peshmerga fighter on Sunday was shot down by unknown gunmen in Kirkuk city, a local police chief said.

“This evening, unknown gunmen opened fire on a Peshmerga member near a restaurant in al-Mas area, northwestern Kirkuk city,” Brig. Sarhad Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The member was seriously wounded and died later in the hospital,” the official noted. “The gunmen have fled to an unknown destination,” the official added, providing no further details.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

2 soldiers wounded in Mosul

Two Iraqi servicemen on Sunday were wounded in two separate incidents in Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“An Iraqi soldier was injured when a gunman threw a hand grenade at his patrol vehicle in al-Jazaer neighborhood, eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Another soldier was wounded in a similar incident in al-Maliya neighborhood, eastern Mosul,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

MNF soldier charged in death of contractor

A Multi-National Force (MNF) serviceman has been arrested on charges of killing a non-Iraqi contractor, according to an official statement.

“A Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldier was charged in the March 26 shooting death of a third country national contractor in Taji, Iraq April 4,” read an MNF statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Pfc. Carl T. Stovall, III assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, was apprehended March 26 and held as a person of interest in connection with the shooting.  Charges were formally preferred against Stovall for murder under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 118,” the statement noted. “Further investigation of the incident is ongoing,” it added.

IED kills child, wounds woman in Mosul

A three-year-old child was killed and a woman was wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“The explosive device went off in al-Iqtisadiyeen neighborhood, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The blast did not target military personnel,” the source noted, adding that the body of the child was taken to the morgue. “Meanwhile, a policeman was wounded when two mortars fell on a police headquarters in al-Wahda neighborhood, southeastern Mosul,” according to the same source.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

IED wounds 7 in Kirkuk

Seven persons on Sunday were injured in an explosive charge blast that ripped through Kirkuk city, according to a local police chief.

“An improvised explosive device (IED) went off at 05:15 p.m. today near Domeez intersection, southern Kirkuk, while a police patrol vehicle was passing the location,” Brig. Sarhad Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Five patrolmen and two civilians were wounded in the explosion, which also caused damage to the vehicle,” the official explained.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Basra governor escapes attempt with IED

The governor of Basra survived an assassination attempt with an improvised explosive device (IED) on Sunday, an official source in the province said.

“An IED went off near Governor Mohammed Mosbeh al-Waeli while he was inspecting work progress on the 14 Tammuz street in al-Djzaer area, central Basra,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Waeli survived unscathed,” the source added, without giving further details.

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Unknown body found west of Makhmour

Policemen found an unidentified body west of the district of Makhmour on Sunday, a security source said.

“The body, apparently of a 30-year-old man, was found on the main road linking the district of al-Kuweir to Makhmour,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body, which showed signs of having been shot, was removed to a morgue,” he added.

Makhmour lies 68 km west of the Kurdish city of Arbil.

Belonging administratively to the province of Ninewa, Makhmour is one of the disputed areas between the central Iraqi government and the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Arbil, the capital city of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, lies 362 km northeast of Baghdad.

Body with slit throat found in Mosul

Policemen found a body with a slit throat in western Mosul city on Sunday, a security source within the Ninewa police department said.

“The body was found in the al-Islah al-Ziraie area, western Mosul. The throat was found slit but the head was not separated,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body, found dumped on a street in the area, showed no signs of having been shot,” the source added, not giving further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 policemen wounded in 2nd IED in Falluja

Three policemen were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in central Falluja, the second in the same place today, according to a security source in the city.

“The IED blast targeted an Iraqi police patrol on al-Kamaliyat street, al-Jumhouriya neighborhood, central Falluja, leaving three policemen injured,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier on Sunday, a local security source said an officer was killed and two policemen wounded when an IED went off in central Falluja.

Falluja, the largest city of the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, has been marked by acts of violence and armed operations since 2004 between the Iraqi and U.S. forces on one hand and armed groups stemming from Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) network on the other.

In early 2006, the sahwa (awakening) tribal fighters teamed up with the Iraqi and U.S. forces and managed to expel AQI operatives from the province.

Falluja lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Officer killed, 2 policemen wounded in IED blast in Falluja

An officer was killed and two policemen wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in central Falluja city on Sunday, a local security source said.

“The IED went off near an Iraqi police patrol on al-Sharrar street, central Falluja, killing a police officer and wounding two personnel,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The patrol vehicles were damaged in the explosion. All roads leading to the blast scene were sealed off,” the source added.

Policeman killed, 4 wounded in armed attack in Samarra

A policeman was killed and four others wounded in an armed attack with incendiary bombs in eastern Samarra city on Sunday, a security source from the Samarra police department said.

“Unidentified gunmen attacked a local police patrol with incendiary bombs in al-Jubayriya neighborhood, eastern Samarra, leaving one policeman killed and four others wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Samarra, a city in Salah al-Din province, lies 120 km north of Baghdad.

“Policemen and Isnad (Support) tribal fighters searched for the culprits in the area where a state of emergency was announced,” the source added.

“The incident is the first of its kind to target Iraqi forces in several months,” he said.

Salah al-Din lies 120 km north of the Iraqi capital.

Gunman arrested while planting IED in Mosul

Police forces on Sunday arrested a gunman while he was planting an improvised explosive device (IED) in front of a police headquarters in Mosul city, according to a security source.

“The gunman was arrested while planting the device at the entrance of al-Hadbaa police department in Bab al-Toub area, downtown Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “A bag containing two IEDs was found in his possession,” the source noted, adding that an investigation is currently underway.

5 wanted men arrested in Babel air drop

Five wanted persons on Sunday were arrested during an air drop operation in Babel province, according to a police commander.

“The operation was carried out in light of intelligence reports revealing the whereabouts of the wanted men,” a Quick Response Department (QRD) commander, Maj. Majed al-Imara, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The operation took place in al-Buhayrat area, Iskandariya district (50 km north of Hilla), the commander explained. Those arrested are believed to have been involved in rape and murder cases, he added.

Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km southwest of Baghdad.

6 AQI members arrested, arms cache seized in Diala

Policemen in Diala arrested six members of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) network and seized a weapons cache in different areas of Diala on Sunday, according to the province’s police chief.

“Policemen conducted an operation that targeted a stronghold of the AQI south of Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Ba'aquba, arresting six members of the armed group who are wanted by virtue of Article 4 of the law on terrorism,” Maj. General Abdulhussain al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The forces also seized a weapons cache south of Baladruz district, (45 km) southwest of Ba'aquba, which contained home-made explosive charges and detonation wires,” Shimari added.

He did not give further details on the operation.

Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
