Iran says it arrested a terrorist cell linked to Israel planning bombings in Tehran

Monday April 27, 2009 02:17 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies

Official sources in Iran reported Sunday that the Iranian Intelligence forces managed to apprehend what was described as “a terrorist cell linked to Israel”. The sources said that cell members were planning bombings in Tehran ahead of the Iranian presidential elections.

Iranian English language Press TV reported that the Intelligence Minister Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'I, said that the detained cell members are linked to Israel.

The minister added that cell members planned a number of bombings in the Iranian capital in order to create chaos ahead of the Iranian presidential elections, planned to be conducted in June.

Mohseni-Eje'I added that based on Iranian Intelligence, Israel is seeking “to use anti-Revolution elements in the development of its evil schemes”, the Press TV reported.

He did not provide further details but called on the Iranians to remain alert for “enemy plots”.

Iran believes that Israel is seeking to destabilize the country via several plots including psychological warfare.

The Press TV stated that in 2008, the Iranian security forces arrested a 45-year-old man on charges of gathering sensitive information to provide it to Israel. Ali Ashtari was found guilty and was sentenced to death.

TEHRAN (FNA)-

Monday 27 Apr 2009

Iranian Intelligence Minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie announced on Sunday that his forces have foiled a terrorist plot to stage serial bomb attacks in Tehran on the threshold of the presidential election in June.

"A team of terrorists, comprising beguiled elements affiliated with the Zionists who aimed to carry out consecutive bomb explosions across the city of Tehran to create insecurity and chaos on the threshold of the 10th presidential election, was identified and arrested" by the Intelligence Ministry, Ejeie said.

Ejeie said based on the evidence gathered by his ministry, "the Zionist regime is seeking to establish contact and lead counterrevolutionary grouplets in a bid to attain its devilish goals". He further urged the Iranian nation to keep vigilant over enemy plots, warning that opponents of the Islamic Revolution are seeking to sow discord among people.
