US Soldier, 11 Iraqis Killed, 15 Injured, 38 Arrested, Protests in Khalis, April 25, 2009


Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- 2 Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack in Mosul.

- The Iraqi Association of Muslim Scholars (AMSI) condemned the recent bomb explosions targeting civilians, mentioning that the goal of perpetrators is to show that there is a need for the US occupation forces to stay in Iraq.

The AMSI statement noticed that these attacks coincided with the rivalry over control of the government by the coalition parties.

- A Sahwa fighter was injured in an attack in Al-Mussayeb, north of Al-Hillah.

- Five Iraqi soldiers were injured in a roadside attack on the Baghdad-Kirkuk road.

- Three policemen were injured in attack on their checkpoint in Darkesh, Mosul.

- US Secretary of State arrived in Baghdad after a wave of suicide attacks indicating a deterioration in the security situation.

- Iraqis demonstrated in the streets of Khalis in protest against the inability of the government to prevent attacks on civilians.

- Tribal chief Madloul Al-Mutlak was assassinated by a bomb sticking to his car, west of Mosul.

- A senior Iraqi police officer was assassinated by a bomb sticking to his car in Al-Sidiya, southwest of Baghdad.

Amsi.org reported the following news:

- An unknown body was found in Al-Latifiya, north of Al-Hillah.

- A US Humvee military vehicle was destroyed by a roadside bomb on Al-Qaem-Haditha road, resulting in casualties among US soldiers.

ISI leader killed in Falluja

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A force from the Falluja police killed a leading member of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in the province of al-Anbar while other Falluja police forces arrested four wanted men in Wassit, according to an interior ministry statement on Saturday.

“Clashes erupted in Falluja today (April 25) between the district police and (ISI fighters), who attacked a checkpoint in the city, leaving a leading member of the ISI killed,” read the statement as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source did not give more details.

Meanwhile, policemen in Wassit province captured four wanted men in accordance with Article 4 of the law on terror, the statement added.

U.S. soldier killed in “non-combat” incident in Salah al-Din

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. Marine was killed in a “non-combat” incident in the province of Salah al-Din, bringing to 14 the number of U.S. servicemen killed in Iraq this month, according to the U.S. army in Iraq on Friday.

“The Marine was killed in a non-combat incident on Friday (April 24),” read a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The incident is under investigation,” it added, not giving further details.

Earlier on Friday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Cpl. William C. Comstock, 21, of Van Buren, Ark., died April 22 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq,” the department said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq.

The death brings to 4,277 the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

Iraqi soldier killed, woman wounded in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

An Iraqi soldier was killed and a woman wounded in an improvised explosive device blast in southeastern Mosul city on Friday, police said.

“The IED went off near an Iraqi army patrol in al-Wihda neighborhood, southeastern Mosul. A soldier was killed in the blast and a woman who happened to be near the blast scene was wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more information about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 killed while planting explosive device

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three persons on Saturday were killed while planting an improvised explosive device (IED) near Khanaqin district, according to Diala’s police chief.

“A fourth person, a Saudi, was arrested by the Diala police,” Abdulhussein al-Shamri told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “An interrogation is currently underway with the arrested person,” Shamri noted. Khanaqin is one of the disputed areas between the Baghdad-based central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). It lies 155 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province.

Tribal chief’s son killed in Mosul blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A son of a chieftain of the Shamar clan was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Sinjar district, west of Mosul city, on Friday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“The IED targeted the vehicle of the chieftain’s son near the main road of al-Biaaj district, west of Sinjar, (110 km) west of Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more information about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Armed attack leaves 6 wounded

SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq:

Six Iraqis were wounded in an armed attack in downtown al-Dujail district, Salah al-Din province, a local security source said on Saturday.

“Last night (April 24), four unidentified gunmen driving a civilian vehicle attacked a group of Iraqi pilgrims who were on their way back from a visit to the two holy shrines of the Imams al-Askari in Samarra on the Baghdad-Mosul road, downtown al-Dujail district (120 km south of Tikrit),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source added. An Iraqi army force engaged in clashes with the attackers, who made their way to al-Nibaie area, one of al-Qaeda’s strongholds in the area, the source explained.

Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

MNF withdraws from archeological Ur

Multi National Force (MNF) personnel have withdrawn from the major inlet leading to the archeological Ur city in preparation for the handover of the area to Iraqi forces on May 13, 2009, according to the director of Dhi-Qar province’s directorate of archeology.

“MNF withdrew yesterday (April 24) from the position,” Abdulameer al-Hamdani told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The forces went back to their location at the Imam Ali Base, 20 km west of Nassiriya,” he said. “Their previous location at the inlet was filled by Iraqi forces,” he added. Nassiriya, the capital city of Dhi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.

Arrests:

15 suspects arrested on terror charges in Anbar

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Fifteen persons on Saturday were arrested on terror-related charges in Anbar province, according to a local security source.

“On Saturday, a force from Aameriyat al-Falluja police arrested 15 suspects believed to have been involved in acts of terrorism against the Iraqi security apparatus in Ahsa village and several other villages,” Maj. Ghazi Faysal told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. An investigation is currently underway, the official noted. Falluja was a scene of armed conflict between U.S. and Iraqi forces on the one hand and al-Qaeda gunmen on the other. Falluja, the capital city of Anbar, lies 45 km west of Baghdad; while Ramadi, the capital of the province, lies 110 west of Baghdad.

19 arrested during Basra raids

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Nineteen wanted persons on Saturday were captured during a wide-scale security operation in Basra province, according to a local police source.

“During raid-and-search campaigns in different parts of the province, 19 wanted men were arrested on terror and criminal charges,” the relations and media office in Basra police told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “A total of 36 unlicensed vehicles and 17 motorbikes were seized during the campaign,” according to the office.

The Shiite city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Campaign launched to hunt down wanted men

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces in Ninewa have launched a wide-scale security campaign to hunt down wanted persons in the province, a local security source said on Saturday.

“This morning, a national police force launched a raid-and-search campaign that included the areas of al-Kornish, al-Midan and al-Sirgkhana in downtown Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Tight security measures have been put in place,” the source noted, adding that vehicles and pedestrians were barred from crossing the old bridge that links the western coast to the areas covered in the campaign.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
