24 Iraqi Soldiers Killed, 48 Injured in a Suicide Bombing in Al-Habbaniya Military Base

Al-Dhari Says Sahwa Fighters Betrayed the Resistance

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- 24 Iraqi soldiers were killed, 48 were injured in a suicide bombing inside Al-Habbaniya Academy, in Al-Anbar Province.

- A US military vehicle was attacked by a roadside bomb in Al-Khamees village, south of Ba'aqoubah.

- Shaikh Hareth Al-Dhari, Chairman of the Iraqi Islamic Scholars, announced that the Iraqi government keeps more than 30,000 Iraqis despite its claims of general amnesty. He also said that there are about 400 Iraqi prisons despite the official claim of only 36 prisons. Al-Dhari also added that the Sahwa fighters betrayed the resistance movement by joining the ranks of the US-led forces.

- 8 Iraqis were injured by a car explosion near police headquarters in Ba'aqouba.

- An Iraqi man was killed, another was injured when US forces fired at their car as they approached a US convoy near Al-Sulaimaniya.

- Iraqi government announced that there are 2.5 million Iraqi orphans, as a result of the war since the 2003 US invasion and occupation of the country.

Suicide blast kills 11, wounds 40 in Falluja

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

At least 11 army soldiers were killed and 40 were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside al-Habaniya base in western Falluja on Thursday, a security source said.

“A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body inside a restaurant in al-Habaniya base in western Falluja, killing 11 and injuring 40,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He gave no more details.

Falluja is 45 km west of Baghdad, while Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, is 110 km west of Baghdad.

2 cops killed, injured in attack in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed and another one was injured in an armed attack on a police checkpoint in western Mosul, a security source said.

“Two gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint in Mosul al-Jadieda region in western Mosul, killing a policeman and injuring another one,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body was sent to the forensic medicine department while the wounded was carried to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Locally-made rocket found in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

A locally-made rocket on Wednesday was found in Kirkuk’s al-Huweija district, a source from the city’s joint coordination center said.

“At 10:30 this morning, police forces found a locally-made rocket and its launch pad in al-Saray area, southwestern Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The rocket was defused and no damage was reported, the source noted. Two fake devices were found in two different parts of al-Kornish Street and removed by patrol personnel, the source added.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians, and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Arrests:

79 suspects, wanted men nabbed in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces on Thursday arrested 14 wanted men and 65 suspected gunmen during a security operation in Basra, the media office of the Basra police said.

“Police forces on Thursday (April 16) waged a wide-scale crackdown operation in separate areas of Basra, where they detained 14 wanted men and 65 suspected gunmen,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The anti-bomb squad defused a roadside bomb, planted on the road near al-Shefaa hospital in northern Basra,” he added.

Basra is 590 km south of Baghdad.

2 gunmen arrested with ammo in their possession

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces on Wednesday arrested two gunmen with arms and ammunition in their possession in Wassit’s Kut city, according to a police commander.

“This evening, forces from the Quick Response Department (QRD) captured two wanted men during a raid on a terrorists’ hideout in Anwar al-Sadr area, eastern Kut city,” QRD Commander Aziz Lateef al-Amara told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “A large number of 72mm rockets and ammunition were seized during the raid,” Amara noted. “Those arrested confessed to having been involved in the murder of several civilians in the province,” Amara explained.

Kut, the capital city of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

43 wanted men detained in Thi-Qar

THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces on Thursday arrested 43 wanted men during a wide-scale security operation in separate areas of Thi-Qar, the police department said.

“Policemen on Thursday (April 16) lunched crackdown operations in separate areas of Thi-Qar, during which 43 wanted men for criminal and terrorist cases were arrested,” said the police department in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Nassiriya, the capital of Thi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.

6 al-Naqshabandiya group members detained near Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Joint security forces on Thursday arrested eight people, including six members of the so-called “al-Naqshabandiya group” in the southwest of Kirkuk, according to a security source.

“A joint force launched a security raid late on Wednesday (April 15) until the small hours of Thursday (April 16), during which eight people, including six members of the self-styled al-Naqshabandiya group were arrested in al-Zeraaa neighborhood in central al-Huwiyja, southwest of Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Al-Naqshabandiya is a group that introduces itself as an Islamic spiritual dogmatic organization, but its ideologies changed into ones of armed struggle against the occupation forces.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
