One Iraqi Killed, 3 Injured, Three Attacks on US Forces, 96 Arrested, April 14, 2009


Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- The 1920s Brigades announced launching a rocket at a US military base west of Baghdad and targeting a Hummer with a roadside bomb, causing US casualties.

- In Al-Doura, south of Baghdad, a roadside bomb targeting a US patrol convoy resulted in injuring four Iraqis.

- A joint Sahwa-government soldiers checkpoint was attacked by gunmen in Haditha, resulting in casualties.

- Tha-er Al-Dabwani, President of (Mukhtar) Al-Qadissiya neighborhood in Mosul was assassinated in front of his home.

3 Iraqi soldiers wounded, 5 suspects nabbed in Diala operation

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three Iraqi servicemen on Tuesday were wounded and five suspects were arrested during a security operation in Diala province, according to a local police source.

“Three Iraqi soldiers were wounded during an operation carried out by al-Adheem emergency forces in downtown Baaquba’s al-Tahrir neighborhood,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Five suspects believed to belong to al-Qaeda organization were captured during the operation,” the source added.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen detonate 4 houses in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four houses belonging to formerly displaced persons in Diala province were detonated by a group of gunmen, according to an official security source.

“Gunmen believed to belong to al-Qaeda organization blew up four houses belonging to formerly displaced families that have returned to their places of origin on al-Shaheed St. and al-Muallimeen neighborhood, downtown Baaquba, throughout the past few weeks,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Three civilians, including a child, were wounded as a result of the explosion,” the source explained, adding that considerable damage was reported to the houses. Leaflets threatening violence against the returnees were distributed in the neighborhood. Four days ago, police forces conducted a wide-scale security operation in al-Muallimeen neighborhood, as well as other neighboring areas, during which 33 suspects were arrested and an amount of arms and ammunition were seized.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Bomb explodes in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces found a mortar shell, while a bomb exploded in two separate incidents in Kirkuk on Tuesday, a source from the joint coordination center said.

“A police force on Tuesday (April 14) found a mortar shell in al-Khadraa neighborhood in southwestern Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that anti-bomb squad rushed to the area and defused it without casualties.

Meanwhile, the same source said that a time bomb went off today (April 14) in Tarieq Baghdad region, without leaving casualties.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

7 bombs defused in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The Baghdad Operations Command on Tuesday said that seven explosive charges were defused and two explosive belts were sized n separate areas of Baghdad in the past 24 hours.

“Iraqi security forces defused seven bombs and seized two explosive belts during security raids in the Iraqi capital in the past 24 hours,” the BOC said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A number of weapons and ammunition were sized during the operations,” it added.

10 Sahwa checkpoints abandon positions in Babel

BABEL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Iraqi army troops were obliged to replace Sahwa forces in 10 checkpoints in Babel, as the Sahwa fighters abandoned their points after not receiving their salaries, a media source from the province’s police said on Tuesday.

“The checkpoints are in al-Iskandariya district, 50 km north of Hilla city,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A force from the Iraqi army 8th division replaced Sahwa forces at the checkpoints,” he added.

Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.

45 different rockets seized in Falluja

Police forces seized a weapons cache east of Falluja city that included 45 different rockets, a police source said on Tuesday.

“The cache was hidden underground in al-Sbaihat area, east of Falluja,” Lieutenant Colonel Hatif Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “It included 18 RPG7 missiles, 10 Katyusha rockets, 20 roadside bombs, 22 mortar shells – 60 mm size, 30 cannon shells – 120 mm size, nine TOW rockets, 11 anti-armor missiles, eight rockets – 57 mm size, and others,” the official pointed out.

Falluja, the largest city in Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

73 persons arrested in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq: Police forces on Tuesday arrested 27 wanted men and 46 suspected gunmen during a security raid in Basra, the Basra police media office said.

“Police forces waged a wide-scale security operation in separate areas of Basra, where they arrested 27 wanted men and 46 suspected gunmen,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“An anti-bomb squad defused two bombs in al-Maaqal region in northern Basra,” it added.

Basra is 590 km south of Baghdad.

Suspect arrested while taking photos of troops with his cell cam

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Police forces arrested a man while he was taking photos of security forces in Karbala city using his cell phone camera, the media director of Karbala police said on Tuesday.

“The arrest took place in al-Ghadeer neighborhood, 3 km southern Karbala,” Major Alaa Abbass told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The suspect used his cell phone camera to shoot the movement of troops,” he said. He pointed out that interrogation is underway to reveal the suspect’s affiliations and his motivations. The holy city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of Baghdad.

17 suspects arrested in Falluja

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Security forces arrested 17 suspects believed to belong to an armed group in southern Falluja, a police source said on Tuesday.

“The arrests were made by in Amiriyat Al-Falluja district,” Major Yaseen Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Those arrested are suspected of being involved in acts of terrorism against Iraqi security forces in a number of the district’s villages,” he said. The source did not mention further details, but noted that interrogation is underway with the suspects.

Falluja, the largest city in Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.
