2 US Soldiers 21 Iraqis Killed, 45 Injured in War Attacks, 110 Arrested, April 11-13, 2009


Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- 2 Iraqi policemen were killed, a third was injured by a roadside bomb in Al-Shurqat.

- A US civilian GMC vehicle was destroyed by a roadside bomb, which killed all its passengers, in Al-Jazira area, in Al-Ramadi city.

- An Iraqi policeman was killed, another was injured by a roadside bomb in Khaniqeen, north of Ba'aqouba.

- A US convoy was attacked by a roadside bomb in Karbala.

- Iraqi gunmen set up several checkpoints at Al-Qaem-Baghdad Highway. They checked passenger's ID cards looking for certain persons on their lits.

Civilian injured by gunmen in Kt

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

A civilian was wounded on Monday by unknown gunmen in western Kut city, a security source said.

“Unknown gunmen shot and wounded a civilian in front of his house in al-Jihad neighborhood in western Kut,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“The police opened an investigation into the incident,” he added.

Kut, the capital of Wassit, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill mayor in eastern Mosul

Unknown gunmen on Monday killed a mayor in eastern Mosul city, according to a police source said.

“Unknown gunmen on Monday (April 13) killed Thaer al-Dabouni, the mayor of al-Qadissiya al-Thaniya neighborhood in eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“They opened fire on him and fled to unknown place,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier killed during operations – MNF

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The Multi-National Forces (MNF) in Iraq said that a coalition forces soldier died of injuries sustained during an explosive projectile attack on a convoy five kilometers south of Karbala, April 13 at approximately 7:40 a.m.

“The soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense,” the MNF said in a release received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The incident is currently under investigation,” it added.

With the death of this soldier, the number of U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq during April 2009 has increased to 10, while the total number of U.S. soldier who fell in Iraq since the beginning of military operations in that country is now 4,273.

U.S. army says soldier killed in IED blast in Salah al-Din

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted his patrol in the province of Salah al-Din, according to a U.S. army release on Sunday.

“A Coalition soldier died of wounds he sustained when an IED went off near his patrol in Salah al-Din,” read the statement as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

It did not give further details.

The announced death brings to nine the number of U.S. fatalities in April and to 4272 the total number since the beginning of combat operations in Iraq in March 2003.

Five U.S. Coalition Soldiers were reportedly killed, and one wounded from a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device attack on Friday (April 10) in Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, 405 km north of Baghdad.

March 2009 saw a record lowest number of U.S. deaths – nine, including five who died of non-combat causes.

Kidnapped officer found dead in Anbar

Police forces on Monday found the body of a kidnapped police officer in northern Anbar, a police source said.

“Unknown gunmen had kidnapped a police captain on Sunday (April 12) from al-Therthar region in northern Anbar and took him to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The police found the officer’s body in al-Therthar desert,” he added, noting that the body bore signs of torture and gunshot wounds.

Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

Civilian gunned down in northern Mosul

 One civilian on Sunday was shot down by unknown gunmen in northern Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“On Sunday evening, unidentified gunmen killed a civilian near his house in al-Hadbaa neighborhood, northern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen shot down the victim on the street before they escaped into nearby alleys,” the source added. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 Sahwa fighters killed by IED

Two Sahwa fighters on Sunday were killed in an explosive charge blast that occurred in Salah al-Din province, according to a local police source.

“Two Sahwa fighters were killed when a sticky improvised explosive device (IED) targeted their vehicle while they were attending a tribal meeting in Balad district,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The Sahwa councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force (MNF) and the Iraqi government. Headed by local chieftains, the councils have been credited with helping reduce violence in many Iraqi provinces, like Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din.

Balad is administratively affiliated with Salah al-Din province, whose capital city, Tikrit, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

7 civilians wounded in Baghdad blast

Seven civilians were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in the area of Jist Diala, southeastern Baghdad, on Sunday, police said.

“The IED went off in al-Hai al-Sinaie area, Jisr Diala, southeastern Baghdad, leaving seven civilians injured,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source did not give further details.

Taxi driver gunned down near Arbil

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

A taxi driver was shot down by unidentified gunmen to the east of Arbil on Sunday, the city’s police chief said.

“Unknown gunmen attacked a taxi driver on the road linking Arbil to the district of Bana Salawa, (5 km) east of Arbil. The driver died after receiving several bullets,” Brig. Abdul Khaleq Tala'at told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The motives behind the incident are still unknown,” he added.

Arbil, the capital city of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, lies 349 km northeast of Baghdad.

Unidentified gunmen kill cop, wound another in Mosul

One policeman was killed and another wounded by unidentified gunmen in two separate incidents in the city of Mosul on Saturday, police said.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire on Saturday at a policeman in a patrol in al-Risala neighborhood, western Mosul, killing him instantly,” a security source in Ninewa told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

In another incident, the source said another policeman was wounded when gunmen opened fire in al-Sokkar neighborhood, northern Mosul, adding the policeman was on a leave when he came under the attack.

“The dead policeman’s body was removed to a morgue while the wounded was rushed to a hospital for treatment,” he added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian killed, woman wounded in Hilla clashes

One civilian was killed on Saturday and a woman was wounded in clashes between an Iraqi and U.S. forces on one side and gunmen on the other north of Hilla city, according to a source from Babel province’s police.

“The clashes took place at al-Haq area of al-Iskandariya district, 50 km north of Hila,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The two victims were close to the scene of the clashes,” he said. “The clashes erupted during a raid operation in the area,” he added. Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.

Civilian killed, 2 wounded in blast in Mandali

One civilian on Saturday was killed and two others were wounded when a roadside bomb went off south of Mandali, according to a security source from the district.

“The incident took place at Bazil area, south of Mandlee (55 km northeast of Baaquba city),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He did not mention further details, but noted that the wounded were admitted to the district’s hospital. Baaquba, the capital city of Missan province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Babel’s suicide blast toll up to 42

BABEL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from the suicide blast that ripped through Babel province earlier today have reached 42, including nine dead, according to a local media source.

“The toll from the explosive belt blast that targeted a checkpoint set up by the Iraqi army and Sahwa fighter in Jisr 18 area (60 km north of Hilla) has reached nine dead and 33 wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Earlier today, the source said that seven Iraqi soldiers and Sahwa fighters were killed and 22 others were wounded as a result of the blast.

Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.

27 wanted men arrested in Thi-Qar

Police forces arrested 27 wanted men in separate areas of Thi-Qar during the past 24 hours, the Thi-Qar police department said on Monday.

“A police force arrested 27 wanted men in separate areas of the Thi-Qar province in the past 24 hours,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The statement gave no more details.

Nassiriya, the capital of Thi-Qar, lies 360 km south of Baghdad.

23 wanted persons, suspects nabbed in Basra

Twenty-three wanted persons and suspects on Monday were captured during search raids in different parts of Basra province, according to a local media source.

“Ten wanted men were arrested on criminal charges, in addition to 13 suspects, including an Iranian woman who entered Iraqi territory illegally,” the relations and media office in Basra told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Thirteen unlicensed vehicles and three motorbikes were seized during the raids,” according to the office.

The Shiite city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

17 wanted men arrested in Karbala

Seventeen wanted persons were arrested in different parts of Karbala province, a local police chief said on Monday.

“Security forces in Karbala arrested 17 wanted men during a security operation that covered different parts of the province,” Staff Maj Gen. Ali Jassem Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Four men were arrested on terror-related charges and 13 others on criminal charges,” the official noted. The Shiite city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

29 arrested, 2 IEDs defused in Basra

Policemen in Basra arrested 15 wanted men and 14 suspects others in a security operation in different areas of the province on Sunday, according to the city’s police information & relations office.

“Police forces conducted a search raid today (April 12) in different areas of Basra, capturing 15 men wanted on terrorist and criminal charges and 14 suspects others and seizing 18 unlicensed vehicles and 17 unlicensed motorbikes,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The Criminal Evidence Police Department personnel also defused two improvised explosive devices found in the area of al-Kharbotliya, central Basra,” it added.

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

2 gunmen arrested in Makhmour

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi army forces on Saturday arrested two persons for their suspected links to the so-called al-Naqshabandiya group during in a security campaign west of Makhmor suburb, an army source said.

“The arrests took place at Dewzati village, 16 km west of Makhmor,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He did not mention further details, but noted that interrogation is underway with those arrested. Al-Naqshabandiya is a group that introduces itself as an Islamic spiritual dogmatic organization, but its ideologies changed into ones of armed struggle against the occupation forces.

12 wanted men nabbed in Dhi-Qar

Twelve wanted persons have been arrested on criminal charges in Dhi-Qar province throughout the past 24 hours, according to a police statement.

The charges included forgery, vandalism, intimidation, terrorism, kidnap and attempted murder, according to the statement that was received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Nassiriya, the capital city of Dhi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.
