Israeli Police: Jerusalem Off-Limits to Palestinian Authority

Israel: Jerusalem off-limits to Palestinian Authority

Date: 16 / 09 / 2008  Time:  15:47
Occupied Jerusalem – Ma’an –

Israeli occupation government police on Tuesday summoned Ahmad Ruwaidi, an attorney within the Palestinian Authority (PA), to warn him that the PA is not permitted to carry on activities inside Jerusalem.

The Israeli occupation police told Ruwaidi that the PA and its presidency may not participate in social or political activities in the city. Police threatened to detain Ruwaidi if he is found acting on behalf of the PA in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian president’s office does not organize activities in the city. Its only presence in Jerusalem is at occasional religious activities related to the Islamic month of Ramadan. These are typically organized by various non-governmental organizations.

Ruwaidi expressed astonishment over the summons, which occurred during President Mahmoud Abbas’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The lawyer said that the incident could only be explained as “an indication that Israel is not interested in the peace process.”

Bethlehem - Ma'an –

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday appointed two new governors for Jerusalem and Jericho.

The new positions will be held by two Fat'h members. Adnan Al-Hussaini was appointed to the Jerusalem office and Kamil Hamid will be the governor of Jericho and the Jordan Valley.

Hamid told Ma’an that the new position is one of “great responsibility, especially in light of the current circumstances.”

Jericho and the Jordan Valley play an essential economic role, Hamid said, and his posting will open “opportunities for cooperation with other countries.”

Hamid has held several positions within the Palestinian Authority and Fatah movement.

Al-Hussaini was the head of Waqf and Religious Affairs in Jerusalem. He also served as the presidential adviser for Jerusalem issues.
