Russia test-fires intercontinental ballistic missile

    MOSCOW, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) --

Russia test-fired a RS-18 intercontinental ballistic missile from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan Wednesday, news agencies reported.

    "The launch came as part of a program intended to prolong the service life of the RS-18 strategic missile systems," Col. Alexander Vovk, a spokesman for the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, was quoted as saying by Interfax.

    The missile has been in service for 31 years, Vovk said, adding that the launch confirmed the reliability of the RS-18.

    The RS-18 missile, which is called the SS-19 Stiletto by the West, was first deployed in 1975. Research and development efforts have been carried out to extend the service life of RS-18 missile systems.
