US Soldier, 3 Georgian Soldiers Killed By a Roadside Bombs, 28 Iraqis Killed, 20 Injured by US Forces in Sadr City, According to Initial May 3, 2008 News Reports

Editor's Note:

Only God knows how many Iraqis are killed everyday. The following represents part of the reporting but the actual number of deaths should very much exceed what's reported.

 

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- A child was killed by a landmine in Khanaqin.

- 12 policemen were killed by US forces in Al-Qaem.

- A child was killed, two others were injured by a mortar landing on a Shurqat neighborhood.

Amsi.org reported the following news:

- 3 Georgian soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb.

- A US soldier was killed yesterday east of Baghdad.

- Two US Hummer vehicles were destroyed near Samarra juncture today, with death and injury of their crews.

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported that many of the vehicles destroyed in US forces bombardment of  Sadr City belonged to Sadr City Hospital. It also published the following photo showing destroyed ambulances and confirming the VOI news below.

   

 

U.S. army says 8 gunmen killed in eastern Baghdad

Baghdad, May 3, (VOI) – Eight gunmen were killed in clashes in around the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, the U.S. army in Iraq said on Saturday. 

"U.S. and Iraqi army patrols in Sadr City and its adjacent areas clashed with a number of gunmen on Friday evening, killing eight of them," according to a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Earlier on Saturday, a health official said twenty patients and workers in al-Sadr Hospital were wounded and 49 civilian and ambulance vehicles were damaged when U.S. warplanes opened fire at the hospital. "The attack on the hospital, considered the main one in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, left 20 patients and workers wounded and 40 civilian vehicles and nine ambulances damaged," Qassem Abdul-Hadi, the al-Rasafa health department media director, told VOI.

Al-Sadr and Imam Ali hospital receive people killed and wounded in the clashes occurring nearly on a daily basis. Sadr City, a stronghold of Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militias, has been witnessing armed clashes since US-backed Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad, which he said targeted "outlaws."

Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continues. AE

Twenty patients and workers in al-Sadr Hospital were wounded and 49 civilian and ambulance vehicles were damaged when U.S. warplanes opened fire at the hospital on Saturday, a health official said. 

"The attack on the hospital, considered the main one in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, left 20 patients and workers wounded and 40 civilian vehicles and nine ambulances damaged," Qassem Abdul-Hadi, the al-Rasafa health department media director, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
Al-Sadr and Imam Ali hospital receive people killed and wounded in the clashes occurring nearly on a daily basis.

Sadr City, a stronghold of Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militias, has been witnessing armed clashes since the US-backed Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad, which he said targeted "outlaws."

Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continues.

Al-Qaeda fighters hold military parades in Diala

Clad in black, brandishing weapons and raising anti-government slogans, 300 al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters on Saturday held a parade in Diala, a security source said. They held a military parade inside al-Asiwa village of al-Saadiya district, 155 km north-east of Ba'aqouba, a security source from Diala province, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The source pointed out “300 al-Qaeda fighters bearing light and medium weapons drove with 50 pick-up vehicles in the village street.” He added “the fighters were clad in black and raised billbords calling to punish policemen, army servicemen, and government public servicemen.”

Earlier, the province of Diala saw similiar parades in al-Gatoon neighbourhood in Ba'aqouba and al-Asri neighbourhood in al-Muqdadia town over the past 4 years, but the fighters’ sway was diminishing after U.S.-backed Iraqi troops launched attacks to clamp down on the violence pervading the mixed ethnicities province. Roadside bombing kills 2 Georgian servicemen in Diala

Georgian Defense Ministry on Saturday said a roadside bombing killed two of its servicemen in Diala.

“Two soldiers from Infantry 13th Brigade of peace keeping operations in Iraq were killed by a roadside explosion in Diala on Friday,” said Georgian Defense Ministry statement released on the Ministry's official Web site. Georgia has 2,000 soldiers stationed across Iraqi cities and districts to man checkpoints and monitor borders.

Communist Party official assassinated in Sa'adiya

Diala, May 3, (VOI) –

An official of the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP)'s local committee was assassinated by a group of gunmen in al-Sa'adiya area, south of the district of Khanaqin, 155 km northeast of Ba'aqouba, on Saturday, a committee member said. 

"An armed group assassinated Abdul-Kareem Mahmoud, the ICP official, in his orchard in Saadiya, (35 km) south of Khanaqin. The incident is being investigated," Hawri Repwar told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Also in Khanaqin, a six-year-old child was killed when an improvised explosive device went off near a house in Al-Shurta neighborhood, Maj. Ahmed Haqqi, the official in charge of the Khanaqin's investigations office, said.

Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

14 killed, 25 wounded in one day of clashes in Sadr City

The Sadr and Imam Ali hospitals received 14 bodies and 25 others wounded in armed clashes in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, during the past 24 hours, medics from the district's two main hospitals said on Saturday.

"The Imam Ali Hospital received 14 martyrs and 23 others wounded during the period between 8:00 a.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday," a hospital source told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Another source from the Sadr Hospital said the facility has received only two wounded people.
Earlier the U.S. army in Iraq said eight gunmen were killed in clashes in around Sadr City.

In a dispatch posted at 2:47pm Baghdad time Friday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that American forces had struck the al-‘Amil neighborhood in western Baghdad during Thursday-Friday night.
 
Yaqen reported a medical source in al-Yarmuk Hospital as saying that his facility received two bodies of people who had been killed in the American attack and in addition five wounded persons were admitted for treatment from wounds received in the same bombardment.

US, Iraqi regime forces seal off al-Mahawil.
 
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:39pm Friday afternoon Beijing time (12:39pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that US forces together with their Iraqi army allies sealed off the city of al-Mahawil, 65km south of Baghdad, and launched a campaign of raids and searches there.

US patrol opens fire on Iraqi police column north of al-Hillah Thursday night, wounding four.
 
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:39pm Friday afternoon Beijing time (12:39pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a US patrol opened fire on a column of Iraqi government “Scorpion” police north of al-Hillah, 100km south of Baghdad, on Thursday night.
 
Xinhua reported a source in the police as saying that the American “friendly fire” attack took place as the column was on its way to Baghdad.  Four of the “Scorpion” policemen were wounded in the apparently accidental attack, and six Iraqi police vehicles were damaged.  The wounded men were transported to hospitals for treatment.  Meanwhile, the US occupation forces and those of the Iraqi regime have launched an investigation into how the event took place.

Iraqi regime forces round up 11 following bomb attack on government troops.
 
In a dispatch posted at 3:14pm Baghdad time Friday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi regime forces arrested 11 people on charges of setting off a bomb near an Iraqi army patrol in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad on Thursday.

US admits crash of unmanned spy plane in southern Iraq early Friday morning.
 
In a dispatch posted at 4:22pm Baghdad time Friday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US military had announced that one of its unmanned spy planes had crashed near the US Imam ‘Ali Airbase in Dhi Qar Province early Friday morning.
 
Yaqen reported a US communiqué as announcing the crash of an MQ-1 Predator unmanned reconnaissance aircraft at about 4am local time.  The American statement gave no reason for the crash.

Sniper wounds Iraqi army soldier in al-Basrah.
 
In a dispatch posted at 5:35pm Baghdad time Friday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a sniper had shot and wounded a soldier in the Iraqi government army in the al-Barradi‘iyah district of the southern Iraqi city of al-Basrah.
